5. Oh, they're so lovely. I grew up with those all over the place....
here in Jersey.

My mom grew them, as well as both grandmas. I remember all the big honeybees getting pissy with us kids when we got too close. :)

Purple rhodeys are my faves!

9. We have an absolute carpenter bee epidemic down here
and it's been getting worse in the past few years. We have regular honeybees, too, but those HUUUUGE carpenter bees are just everywhere. I grew up here, and I don't ever remember seeing as many of them as we have right now. I'm kinda wondering what's changed in the environment to cause this explosion, 'cause as a bee-phobic person, I'm getting awfully tired of not being able to sit down outside on campus without having the damned things swarming all around me.

4. I LOVE both our state flower, and state seashell.....
New Jersey's state flower - the purple violet:

New Jersey's state seashell - the knobbed whelk:

My favorite color is purple, and I collect seashells, so these things make me a very happy New Jersey native. :)

6. Washington's State Tree - The Western Hemlock.
I love them because they are tend to grow in temperate rain forests, and I'm so excited to live near one after living in Texas for 28 years.

7. Trilobites.
Many trilobites had large eyes. They are, in fact, the first organisms on earth known to have eyes.

13. I had no idea about half of these "official state" things!
California has an official state fossil (Sabre-Toothed Cat (Smilodon californicus)) and reptile Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agasizzi)!

But, I'd have to say my favorite is the state tree

the California Redwood (Taxodiaceae Sequoia sempervirens) and the Giant Sequoia (Taxodiaceae Sequoiadendron giganteum)

21. The Horny Toad, of course

We used to rub their bellies in order to make them spit blood.

Our state butterfly ain't too shabby either:

When I was young, there was a house down the street with a tree that used be get covered in Monarchs during season.

Sadly, both Horned Toads and Monarch butterflies are hard to find anymore.

22. The iris.
Tennessee's state flower. Plus, my grandfather used to grow them and cut me armfulls of them to take home whenever I visited.

I love dogwoods, too. In fact, Knoxville has the Dogwood Arts Festival every year. It's gorgeous here right now.
