Poll question: Okay, important poll: Denim over the age of thirty.
Here's the back story; I'm reading a "teen" book (part of a series my son is reading, just like to know what's going into his head) and one of the characters says that anyone over the age of 30 looks silly in denim. I know it's fiction, but usually an author has some basis in reality when making statements in a story. Now I personally live in jeans when I'm not working and I never considered that wearing them makes me look silly. I'll be wearing them untill the day I die, but I'd like to get some other takes on the subject.

So what's the Lounge opinion on this?

1. it's just greed
We had them first, for fuck's sake. They just don't want to look like they are copying us. Ask them why they are wearing old fart pants?

2. Well if it looks silly
then I'll have to look silly, cause I wear them everywhere.

Did George Will write that book?

6. LOL. Sounds like him doesn't it?
No the author is Darren Shan. This series is called Demonata. He also wrote the Cirque Du Freak series.

BTW, thanks for having my back.:pals:

10. My pleasure of course.

Old George needs to stay out of Texas if he gets so riled up by adults in jeans... I still can't believe he did a column on it.

So how does telling everyone how to dress square with the tea bagging philosophy George?:eyes:

3. Do you mean jeans?
Sorry to sound lame, but of denim means jeans, I wear denim 95% of the time.

In fact, I'm going through a big deal right now because I'm trying to find some old pants that are not jeans (but not part of a suit) to wear for an important meeting.

What's wrong with jeans, f'r chrissakes?

8. Well, the character's entire ensemble described in the book was denim,
so perhaps it was meant for that. I've just never heard that before.

12. Anyone who thinks that older people shouldn't wear denim
should STFU and get a life. People of all ages have been wearing denim for as long as there has been denim, and young people aren't going to be able to claim exclusive right to it any time soon. :P

I think that used to be the case (I remember thinking it myself growing up in the '70s), but now that Boomers are colliding with retirement, it's not the same.

I grew up in the 60's and 70's, and except for work or outdoor activities I don't remember a lot of adults wearing jeans, but we grew up wearing them, so why should we stop?

Denim for kids.
Denim for teens.
Denim for adults.
Denim jackets for dogs.
Denim for cat toys.
Denim for tote bags.
Denim Depends. I shit you not. Denim Depends will be in fashion by the time Gen X gets old and, well, shitty.

27. I'm clearly in the minority...
denim is for small children (like under age 8), lumberjacks, auto mechanics and pretty much nobody else.

They're pants made out of a god-damned tent fabric. I admit I wear them to work in the garden or to fix the heater or to do other messy work, but I'd be too embarrassed to be ever caught-dead out-in-public wearing jeans.

What do I know though? I'm just a chain-smoking cocktail-swilling slacks-wearer. I own more suits and trilbys than pairs of jeans even.

What is that/are those?

I've worn denim in some form for most of my life, and I'm 51. I've spent most of that time in the midwest/west, though, so maybe that's why.

I grew up doing work and play that would chew up anything less than a pair of 501's. Just got too used to them I guess.:)

32. How far over 30? I'm 61 and I wear jeans 98% of the time - the other 2%
of the time I'm naked, and that REALLY looks silly.
I still wear Tee shirts, jeans, a leather jacket, just like I have for the last 50 years.
It's either that or those goofy looking old man pants with the no-belt thing.

When I retired, I bought 4 new pairs of jeans to last for a few years.

Having lived in the western US all of my life, we tend to live in denim--we can clean up pretty well when we need to, but the rest of the time it's jeans.

it can be worn by anyone, regardless of age.

My stepfather ( RIP) worn them till the end,
when he was 92 yrs. old.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid hiker
until he was 90.

And no, he didn't look "silly".
