...Windows Vista...
Seriously...f**k User Account Control.

If you have an administrator account, you should be able to install and delete whatever you want without giving explicit permission for the deed. It gets monotonous when you have to click that little button to get your computer to do anything and I'm willing to bet that MOST people stop reading the alerts after the hundred thousandth time.

If you wanted to be smart about it you'd force computer users to create an administrator account that has all power by default without the stupid-as-hell user account control AS WELL AS a limited user account for everyday use.

You know...like Linux does it.

Soon to be FORMER windows user.

1. Why not just shut down UAC?

2. It is a tad excessive, but I grew used to it... oh,
Vista's Admin account is hidden by default; only end user account (akin to the "power users" security level) are allowed and UAC forces you to be conscious of your actions.

Assuming it hasn't been cracked yet, in theory, should malware attempt to install itself, you're going to be prompted by UAC beforehand.

In ways, I prefer Linux and its sudo command, but until Microsoft replaces its core with a Unix kernel, there's not much people can do. A shame; Unix kernel plus real advancements in WINE to make the latest productivity apps run flawlessly -- such a Windows would be most welcomed...

3. Just kill it.
Start --> Control Panel -> Security -> Security Center -> Turn off User Account Control seems to do it. It is very satisfying to do this, and free WinPatrol does a much better job: http://www.winpatrol.com/

5. Well, the sidebar thing is cool...
... but otherwise Vista really blows - it takes a month to boot, a week to wake up from sleeping, and it randomly decides to do shit with cryptic process names. Then there are all of the stupid pop-up boxes that fade out if you ignore them and - OOOH my favorite: "Hello? Hell-LOOOoooo! Fuck, not again" - yep, total machine freeze for no reason.

I still run a bunch of 98 SE boxes and they're quite stable (as is my 2000 Pro box).
