DU cat owners, help needed
Edited on Mon Apr-20-09 12:21 PM by Incitatus
I cannot get rid of the fleas on my cat. I have tried Frontline, Zodiac and a couple different flea shampoos. Nothing is working.

What do you do?

The cat does not go outside.

There are no other animals in the house. However, there are some woods right past the backyard and several raccoons that roam about.

1. take the cat to a vet and ask

that is odd. Unless you are not maintaining and he is getting reinfested. I think you need professional advice. You don't want to pile on the toxins though. Ask vet about Revolution.

2. Is it an outdoor cat? You may never get rid of them if the cat
keeps going outside.

Do you have a source of fleas in your house? You may have to flea bomb parts of your house.

I've found that the only thing that stops a bad flea infestation is shampooing followed by daily brushing. Keep doing it until the cat hates you....finally, you just get most of them out and THEN dose with Frontline.

I think Frontline works great keeping fleas off....but not so great if you already have a flea infestation. Just MHO, though.

3. Beat boric acid into all carpeting.
It can take two weeks or more to be sure no new eggs are hatching.

4. There's NO substitue for putting your cat in the sink and having someone dowse it with
warm water and flea bath.

It's the only thing that works.

6. I think I've had good luck with Advantage
but I also think you'll need to vacuum everything in sight too.... fleas lay eggs and make more fleas.

8. Treat the house.
Fleas spend less than 20% of their time on the animal. They spend most of their time in the environment the animal lives in. Treat the house. Buy some Bengal, plan a trip away for the day, board the cat for the day, spray the hell out of the house, every nook and cranny, and come home in a few hours and air the place out.

Once you've done that, give the cat a nice long bath and let him soak in the shampoo for about 5 minutes. Rinse well, and your problem will be mostly solved.

You may have to treat the house again in about a week, but after that, all new flea babies will die fast enough that the cat can have some peace.

This plan works. It's what I do every couple years if I see the slightest sign of fleas or ticks, even in the yard. Haven't had flea problems in 20 years since I learned this trick from the groomer I worked for back in '88.
