Susan Boyle's fence is replaced by West Lothian City Council...
For real...

http://news.scotsman.com/latestnews/TV-sensation-Susan-Boyle-enjoys.5187893.jp

The best part...

Council worker Steven Carroll, who was charged with the task, was offered a cup of tea by the woman herself while he carried out the work yesterday.

6. Quite... Almost as funny as the fake subject lines on DU last weekend...
It's really funny that Susan Boyle's fence repairman has his 15 minutes of fame, because the world is starved for any information about her.

2. I love hearing about her. She is such a great character. She paid for her own recording so she could
become rich off that 1999 recording. I hope she does. In my opinion her voice was much better on that recording than at "Britain's got talent".

3. I hadn't read that far... (my ADD)
I think as we learn more about her... We'll discover that she's sharper and more self-confident than the initial video made her out to be... But, she definitely tried and tried again to get somewhere despite her circumstances. And, I don't believe she was limited by looks.

4. I don't think she is unattractive at all. I think she has a sweet face.

5. I don't either... Cute, animated, full of joy, IMO...

Did my comment imply otherwise? I hope not... my reference to "her looks" was meant to acknowledge that subject is part of the public discussion about Susan Boyle.

I've thought about this quite a bit about this issue....

I didn't think about her appearance much when I first watched... The cognitive disconnect for me was the fact that she was undiscovered at her age... because of the emotional sophistication of her vocals that contradicts her background and demeanor. (I recognized as soon as I typed those words that there is a nuance I am grasping for, unsuccessfully.)

However, I must admit that if I had listened to her "Cry Me a River" before knowing anything about Susan Boyle... I would have never imagined that voice belonged to a never-married, never-been-kissed 48 year old woman living alone with her cat in a Scottish village.

What I want to know... How did she develop and fine-tune the emotional power behind her singing?

UPON EDIT: I admit when I first passed the YouTube video on to my friends I prefaced it with the "Never judge a book by it's cover" subject line. I regret that now, because that trite phrase fails to embody what Susan Boyle is all about... I think fundamentally we, fellow human-beings, see her as an inspirational example that we should keep plugging away at our dreams despite life's detours (taking care of our aging parents) and obstacles (bullies, lack of funding, etc). If we do that.. one day, we will be rewarded when our preparation meets an opportunity.

7. But even Ella Fitzgerald's career was hampered by her looks. Compare her to
Doris Day, Lena Horne and Rosemary Clooney. Ella was big and fat and sweated like an NBA player at the foul line.

Appearances are really important for women in public life. Think of all the 'ugly' jokes about big/not 'cute' women: Eleanor Roosevelt, Janet Reno, Julia Child, Barbara Bush, etc.

Hell, Katharine Hepburn was always been told she was ugly.

11. I agree her message is one of compassion and hope. And we need messages like
that during these hard economic times.

12. I used to put a towel on my head to pretend I had long hair too. My mom wouldn't allow me long hair
so that is what I resorted too. Ha! had not thought of that in a while.

10. The BE$T part and Mu$ic to my ears is
"It was also revealed yesterday that her decision to pay for her one and only recording session could be worth millions of pounds to her, as it means she owns the copyright to her 1999 renditions."

I am SOOO rooting for this woman to succeed on her own terms. Cowell and crew better fucking deliver me my fairy-tale ending in that she doesn't even have to win, (yeah, right. ) but gets to record an hour of what SHE wants to sing the way SHE wants it to sound and MAKE HER MARK. (As if she hasn't ALREADY! )

WHO IS ELAINE PAIGE?, Susan's idol?? Well now I know and she's terrific!

This is jes' wunnerful!! EP with Barbara Dickson (DAMN, who knew? They both look "good" to me. WHAT A DUET! )
