Opinions on on-line courses
I'm going to be taking an on-line business math course through my community college over the summer. I have to take a math course and I HATE math. I decided to do it online because I want to be available to the kids during the day and work part-time at night.

So tell me your online course experiences. Did you find it more difficult or easier than being in a classroom. Did you have trouble staying motivated? I'm not too certain how my tendency to procrastinate doing unpleasant tasks will affect my success. Any tips?

Eeeeek math.

:hi:

2. You can do anything
:)

I tried one and dropped it. That's just me. It was an American History class and that dude wanted us to, like, read entire books per week. I'm not a big reader. I did buy the books and read them (bits and pieces) in my own time after though hehe.

My daughter is enlightening me on how often online courses become the only option. I can't wait to see all the fun things she runs into this year.

You plain flat rawk, so online classes will be cake for you.

:*

4. LoL
Well I've been learning that all those things that used to scare me into hibernation, really aren't all that difficult in reality. Hopefully conquering my math fear will be the next thing.

Thanks for believing in me.

5. I'm taking an online course, but there's no time limit on taking it
Unfortunately, I do procrastinate. It's not a college course, though. It's a CE-type course.

13. Continuing Education
It has to do with my professional field, instead of being a college course.

I never finished college, because of real life getting in the way.

6. I took one online class in college
It was a psychology class and it was pretty easy (got an A). The information wasn't difficult to understand so I had a good experience. I'm the opposite of a procrastinator. I like to get things done and over with so motivating myself to do the work wasn't a problem.

There are certain topics I would avoid taking online, like math. I'm good at math and can pick it up quickly. I, however, like seeing it done and explained in person. This may not be a problem for you though.

9. That's a good point.
I don't pick up math easily. I worry that I may need more face-to-face with the teacher. I guess we'll see. Heh.

14. A good teacher
who will make themself available to assist students makes a big difference. The professor I had for the psychology class was available online and in person, although I didn't really need the help. The materials provided will be key too. A lot of professors have videos online now which can be very helpful.

Good luck with your class!

7. I've heard it's a mixed bag
Edited on Tue Apr-21-09 09:42 PM by Symarip
When I was in the Navy, some guys loved em and some hated em. I wouldn't know - when I got my degree I went the traditional route with an instructor and books and all that jazz.

Edited to add: Need a tutor?

21. I am taking a bunch right now
My opinion is that the harder classes would have been better in a traditional classroom. The easy ones online was fine.

** Hard classes for me **
Film Appreciation - Hated it. Almost makes me never want to watch a movie again. I took this for a fall mini semester and there was lots to do. Watch about 5 films, do two powerpoints, two papers and some tests. All in a 5 week class. I figured I could pass without the papers, so I skipped that part. I am surprized I got a B.

Philosophy - Hard because I do not care about things that do not matter. Is there life after death, are we stuck in a Matrix like world, how do we know what we know? I really don't care. I will be lucky to get a D in this class.

** Easy classes for me **
Computer Skills - This one is super easy. It started with telling me what a montior and keyboard are. Who does not know that? Anyway the best part is learning about Office 2007 and the new layout. I hope this will help me at work. Easy A.

Government - Read the chapters, do the study guide and take the test on time. Not much to this class. Mainly, making sure I can complete the study guide before the test date.

You do have to be organized and know what school work you will do everyday. I keep a large binder with my course schedules at the front so I can check off tasks as I complete them. It makes it easy to see what is due each week. I can also keep track of my grades this way without having to log in and view them. The rest of the binder contains my study guides and other things I have printed out. Lectures were easier for me to read when they were printed out. It also meant I could read things in other places and highlight important things.

22. I have done one on-line class.
It worked well for me, I just had to remember the due dates of things. Remember to write them all down. lol. I don't know about math though. I usually do better at that when there is a teacher with that kind of thing.
Good luck!

23. My wife did her entire masters degree online
I barely saw her in the evenings for 4 years.
It depends on your personality. I couldn't do it but my wife is a workaholic and couldn't stop until she was done with an assignment.
