8. In terms of pulp, he was okay.

In terms of literature? No, he isn't so great.

His characters and stories were great, but yeah, he didn't spin the tales at a level they deserved.

I think the reason he gets so much acclaim is because of his characters - Conan, Red Sonja, that Puritan guy. Great, fantastic characters.

But ploddy heavy-handed writing.
