are Gatsby parties overdone?
We just had the bright idea in this household to give a Gatsby party for our graduating senior (who loved the movie and Robert Redford's clothes in it).

But then I saw on the Internet that apparently a lot of colleges assign a Gatsby project to English classes -- to plan a Gatsby party.

Oh bother.

Have you ever been to a Gatsby party? More than one? Are they common?

2. God damn, I hated that book.
Out of all the books they could have high school students read, I have no idea why they have them read that pretentious crap.

3. Probably because it is easily the greatest example of fictional prose in the English language.
Other than that, I guess their motives are confusing.

5. If by "greatest example of fictional prose in the English language" you mean...

... "an incredibly dull story that has been forced upon students for decades because of easily accessible lesson plans". You would be correct.

6. No, I meant "a complex, intricately woven story whose use of language
and literary devices surpasses all others." It might bore those not sophisticated enough to understand it, but that's the teacher's fault.

and then retreated back into their money, or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."

Who does that remind you of?

8. I didn't much care the book in high school,
but I have a greater appreciation for it now. It's still not quite my cup of tea, even though I can recognize it as an outstanding piece of literature.

And I think Gatsby parties sound like a lot of fun. I've only heard of a few happening myself. They're certainly not as overdone as toga parties! I say go ahead with the theme party, this sounds like a great way to celebrate your son's graduation!
