It was a Whirlpool.
An upright freezer. It never needed any servicing. For 40 years it kept our supplies frozen solid and only required the occasional defrosting.
The old war-horse has been with us since when there was a restaurant here.
About a month or so ago, it intermittently made clicking noises. For the last week or so the clicks were coming more often and for longer intervals. A couple of days ago we cleared most everything out of the big, ailing freezer. Used some of the foodstuff, threw some out and spread the rest around in the refrigerator freezer compartments.
Today we had the local appliance guy come and pronounce the big freezer's condition as terminal. It would need a new compressor... which would cost a fortune except it would be impossible to find.
So. We went off to Kmart and bought a new big freezer. It was on sale. Today was the last day of the sale. So it was shockingly inexpensive, relatively speaking. Plus they'll deliver it and take the old guy away to its final resting place.
And when we got home, the old fellow was gone. As evidenced by the puddle of water pooling on the ground.
Sniff.
Good-bye trusty freezer.
They don't make appliances like you anymore.
Sure, the new freezer will be a bright and shiny white on the outside where you had several coats of white paint hiding swirls of rust.
And yes, the new one will be much more energy-efficient.
But it just won't be the same.
