This week I bought a large package of falafel - probably enough to last a month. But it is so delicious I only have 8 balls left. I've been eating them with humus and cucumbers and lettuce and tomatoes and I am afraid I may have gained weight from this all vegetarian fare. Oh, my god! Falafel is damned wonderful stuff.
If anyone defiles my appreciation of falafel with a Bill O'Riley loofah comment - I am done with you.
I think they can be made out of fava beans too. Or, instead of balls, they can be patties. Maybe it's the deep fried aspect of them that has done me in.....
most health-conscious middle-easterners I've known bake rather than fry their felafel as do many restaurants because it's easier to cook them in bulk that way. The taste is slightly different as they're less oily. You also have to add about 1 tsp of cooking oil or olive oil to the mix.
Also, get a recipe and make them at home. If you use canned garbanzos, it's not that difficult to make. The hardest part is getting them to hold together.
