"Eats, Shoots and Leaves?" Need Grammar Police ruling on "Beyonce does interview with bleeding feet"
From CNN's home page: "Beyonce does interview with bleeding feet" (http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/showbiz/2009/04/23/dcl.ajh.beyonce.buzz.cnn)

1). Were Beyonce's feet bleeding while participating in the video?

2). Did she interview a pair of bleeding feet?

3). Were the bleeding feet present during the interview but not attached to Beyonce?

4). Did the bleeding feet interview Beyonce?

Come on, Grammar Police. Do your THING.

1. Many grammar rules, by necessity, go out the window for headlines.
Headlines just don't have enough room in them to make grammatically perfect sentences.

Which means that I have been quite shocked on occasion, until I read the article; every now and again someone crams the words into the space knowing full well what they mean, but to a new reader with no context, they can be extremely hilarious.

This headline wouldn't make me think twice at all on initial reading. It's a well composed headline.

If it were offered as a sentence in the article, then I would put my foot down (bleeding or not!).

5. By ignorance or apathy, not necessity
Headline writing is becoming a lost art, with virtually all internet heds being written by designers, not editors. In the old days of journalism — say, 10 years ago — an editor who could write a good hed was important to a newspaper. Not so much anymore.

And that's a crappy hed. It should read something like, "With bloody feet, Beyonce gives interview." ("Does" is ambiguous; it could mean she was interviewed or interviewed someone else.)

8. I'm a copy editor and I don't even want to go into that..
It's just too funny and could be interpreted in many ways.

12. Of course, in the days of real journalism, we wouldn't have this discussion at all
since any legitimate journalist would know that no one should fucking care about the state of Beyonce's feet during an interview.

11. ... like this:
Beyonce: ... and how long have you been bleeding?
Feet: about five minutes. Do you have any band-aids?

6. "Oral Congess at Local Hotel"
While I have no doubt that's a nightly occurrence, the Dental Convention only meets once a year.

7. oh that's a great band
Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 12:45 PM by Schema Thing
I saw them with Mangled Hand at the Cow Palace.

....er, well, I mean to say they were touring with Mangled Hand. I didn't attend the Bleeding Feet with the members of Mangled Hand as my posse. And by "attend the bleeding feet" I mean "attend the bleeding feet concert" not "wrap bloody stumps in gauze".

Hope that's clear.

9. the headline is biased
they should just report that she interviewed the feet, no need to disparage the feet with the "bleeding" part.
