My nephew has a PS3 but no computer. This could be a low cost option for him. He's thirty but has zero computer/internet experience which means that I would have to get it working for him.

Even if he gets a desktop/laptop I am tempted to start him out on linux. He won't have any of those nasty microsoft habits to unlearn.

Okay, Linux helped me to ultimately move to the Mac, but what can one do on a Linuxified PS3 that can't be done on any other platform?

It may become a very useful addition to my media center. Only time will tell. Mainly I am doing it because I can, no other real reason.

My Mac Pro, which I am on now, is currently acting as my media center/server and is plugged into my TV and my stereo. So, the PS3 may end up being a bit redundant, but when has that ever stopped anyone... :P

12. Sorry to be a party pooper

Sony have really screwed PS3 Linux by not allowing access to the graphics card. This results in a very very slow linux that is nothing more than a pain to run.

There is a PS3 version of mplayer and there are people working on getting graphics boosts out of the PS3 (on PS Ubuntu) but do not expect much in the way of media performance (especially HD).
