18. I am being less merciless with myself.

I have had a few long phone conversations with some close friends. My head knows that there is not a thing I could have done. And there are even moments that my emotions are realizing this. Baby steps I guess. One thing I know for sure, complete independence from other people is an abject impossibility. All of us (even hermitty types like me) need other people, as sounding boards, as emotional and mental support, and as fellow travelers.

It is not easy to come face to face with ones own human foibles. It is incredibly humbling.

43. Here is an update on the situation

I found out over the weekend that a close friend of mine passed away suddenly last Wednesday. R and I'd had a falling out, and never got in touch with each other again. I have missed her in my life but was too proud to try and straighten things out.

The details about her death are sketchy right now. She lived in the Minneapolis area, but the first notice of her death was in last Thursday's edition of a Fort Myers, FL paper.

Apparently, she had been on a cruise with her parents and her brother's family. She died in Mexico. She had gone into a gift shop and collapsed in there, an apparent heart attack. Her mom went in to go see what was taking so long and found her being given CPR. She had just turned 49.
