1. I've had one in a hotel
Edited on Tue Apr-28-09 06:38 AM by Richardo
Meh.

I don't know how much they cost but I'm pretty much able to sleep practically anywhere on demand, so I don't think I'd invest in one.

4. If I'm tired enough I can sleep almost anywhere too.....but
our bed is just not good, my husband moves around and he wakes me up. We just paid 500.00 two years ago on the one we have now, can't believe we need another one so soon. "sigh*

2. I like them.
You can get the exact firmness you need; no guesswork at all. Another idea about mattresses, have you slept in a hotel that had good beds for you? Find out what they use. For myself I love Westin and Embassy Suites beds. Nothing felt better to me.

5. thanks Wapsie, but most of the hotels we have been in are
pretty cheap, we don't usually spend a lot of money on hotels, but thanks.

12. I stayed in a Westin hotel about 10 years back
even I loved the bed, and I'm one of those people that have trouble sleeping in most beds - especially a new one. When we go to Disney this summer, I'm determined to stay in a Westin down there.

3. Also, check the Tempurpedic beds
I do not know how similarly priced the sleep number beds are, but I have a tempurpedic bed and it is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in.

13. I loved our tempurpedic bed for the first year or so
but, it seems to have lost its comfortable-ness the past few years.

7. My wife and I were sold on one...
...but were left waiting a month and a half for a Saturday delivery date, or anything that would match our schedule. They don't do Mondays, and Saturday deliveries only once every other month. The lesson is that the people who sell you the mattress may have nothing to do with the "fulfillment center" that arranges delivery. YMMV.

After being jerked around for that many weeks, we simply canceled the order--not without hearing vaguely insulting innuendo from the fulfillment center rep, who complained that I was "not willing to work with them."

I'm sure they would have loved to keep the sale, but their delivery schedule was not under control, so fuck 'em. We bought a Tempurpedic which was delivered in a day or two, and it is the best bed EVAR.

We did keep the Select Comfort pillows. They are great.

8. What is the problem with your current mattress? It may be that
a Memory foam mattress topper would solve your comfort problems. Years ago, we bought one because our new mattress was not comfortable for me. I have back problems and another mattress would not be a cure. We bought one of the Carpenter Co's 2" toppers and it made the surface contour to by body so that the pressure of the mattress would not hurt. My husband could sleep on anything so he did not care. He also found it very comfortable to have the contour.

I think If I had to but a new mattress, I would still have a Memory Foam topper.

There are good and bad ones. Some of them are just cheap foam rubber toppers. Not good. The one I have will not heat up in warm weather which is good because I do not have air conditioning.

9. We've been very happy with ours.
We've had a king-size pillow-top for about 5 years and we are very satisfied. The best part is the dual controls for two people who want different settings.

One other advantage is how light the whole thing is. A standard king weighs a ton but one person can easily move this one for cleaning. I even lifted it up once to retrieve a sick cat.

I would consider a night in a hotel that has them, one couple we recommended it to loves theirs, another couple we know didn't like the one they bought so they returned it.

It's all about individual preferences.

10. OMG! The "Mattress Scam". Buying a new mattress is one of the circles of hell.
My research after the last hosing we got at the hands of the scam-artists was:

if you like firm, go latex

if you go with a more traditional mattress, do NOT get one with the padding on top.

You can always go purchase padding later.

15. I read (and it makes sense) that even if you want the padding it's better to buy a
pad than to buy a pillow top mattress. The pillow top will wear out long before the mattress and then you have to replace the whole thing. A mattress pad is a lot easier and cheaper to replace than an entire mattress. We got the memory foam topper. It's great. I tried laying on a memory foam mattress and didn't like how far you sink into it. But the topper is just right.

6 months later.

11. yes very much worth it
wife and I have had one for 3 years now. we are night and day when it comes to sleep habits, i prefer something similar to a hammock she could sleep on the floor. On top of that, we also purchased a comforter that has different materials on each half so you sleep at different temps. My side is 12 degrees cooler than her side which is well worth the money.

I had pretty serious problems sleeping, went through a high end serta, a temperpedic (nice but the material makes them very hot at night) and finally went with the select comfort. definitely worth the money.

16. Not really
My husband and I have one and it's okay comfort-wise, but hasn't held up very well. We bought ours 8 years ago and the foam mattress cover that goes over the air chamber has not held up well at all. The foam on the sides has broken off from the top and so doesn't hold the sides up very well. One of these days when money eases up I'll see if we can replace the top. All in all, I prefer my old tube waterbed.
