The Outer Banks of North Carolina (pics)
My fiancee's brother got married this weekend down in Duck, NC, on the Outer Banks. Pretty incredible place:

3. 20 years ago
I spent a week a year (for three years) between Duck and Nags Head. Wonderful area. Don't know if Nags Head is still this way - but the Kitsch in the name of the establishments always gave me a kick. The only two places I have been that were rivals were Monterey, California and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Found each place uniquely charming and magnetic (as wanting to keep coming back.)

Congrats to the newly weds!

4. got caught in a hurricane there
Alex, in 2004. Not a biggie, a category 1 that shook the house for 8 hours.

got thrown off the island another time, ruining the vacation, because of Hurricane Bonnie that ended up not doing much.

It is a beautiful place, a good place for a summer beach vacation.

You are going to ruin your retinas staring into the sun like that, please tell me you weren't using the eye piece.

7. Hey -- I went to Kitty Hawk in 1974 when I was in the Army
Rode down on the back of a Honda 350 motorcycle piloted by my Army comrade Roger Cameron, about 100 miles or so from our post at Fort Monroe VA -- down US-17 or whatever the hell highway went through Elizabeth City. A 200-mile roundtrip on a small motorcycle in a single afternoon makes one's ass REAL sore and I still had to work the midnight shift at the Comm Center that night.
It was October and the weather was cold and windy. Probably much like the day in 1903 that Orville and Wilbur flew off the sand hill there.
John
Not one of my favorite road trips, but certainly one of my more memorable. Looks like your trip went somewhat better.

9. Funny ... I'm not a fan of the Outer Banks now that I live on a NC beach
I prefer the southernmost NC beaches to the Outer Banks. I used to think the OB were the shits back when I lived in Raleigh and now that I live on Holden Beach I really don't know what I was thinking...

Great pictures, btw.

11. We spent Christmas down there in Nags Head this year.
It was beautiful. :)

It's a whole different experience in the winter when nobody is around. It's a very quiet and peaceful area.

12. That was the crazy part for my trip
The tourist season in Duck apparently starts May 1. We were there April 24-28, absolutely gorgeous weather, everything in bloom...but the whole place was completely deserted. We had the beach, the neighborhood and the town to ourselves. When the dolphins showed up on Saturday, we were the only ones to see them.

Weirdly enough, though, I didn't see any ducks. Not a single goddam one. :)

The ones that survived learned to stay the hell away from Duck

13. Used to go down there when I was a kid
Back in the late 60's and early 70's. It's where I learned how to body surf. I doubt I'd recognize the place now. Is the ocean still wet?

16. I want to thank you sincerely
You have not only made my day by sharing your photos with me, but you have given me some of the strength to endure the final quarter working as a teacher assistant in a middle school. We go to Nags Head every year for a week and I LIVE for my summer vacation there!

I don't do a DAMN thing for the entire week 'cept lounge on the beach or at the pool, take the kids to play putt-putt, drive go-carts, and we eat and drink a lot... LOL!

We go with 6-8 other families and rent three houses next to each other. It is a grand time and it's this time of year that I start thinking about wanting to be there!

17. LOVE the Outer Banks.
Grew up in NC and spent plenty of time there. That was before it was as developed as now.

Went to summer sailing camp for several years near there. Camp Seafarer; I'll never forget it.
