Country great Verne Gosdin has died.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Singer Vern Gosdin, who recorded country music hits like the award-winning "Chiseled in Stone" during a 30-year career, has died. He was 74.

Michael Illobre, funeral director at Mount Olivet Funeral Home in Nashville, said Wednesday that Gosdin was under hospice care and died late Tuesday at an area hospital.

The singer's administrative assistant, Dawn Hall, said Gosdin had a history of strokes and suffered the latest one a few weeks ago.

1. Who?
As the only DUer who noted when Chris LeDoux died, I know a little bit about country, but have not heard of him, or that song. But I don't go for much pre-1975 country either.

5. I just found out Chris LeDoux died a few months ago.
Judging by the date of his death, I was probably on vacation, so I missed it. A couple months ago I ran across his bio randomly, and was stunned to see he was dead.

Vern Gosdin was called "The Voice." He was big in the 70s and 80s. I'm surprised you never heard "Set em up, Joe"--that song was everywhere in the late 80s. He was also big on CMT in their early years.

10. I have heard "set 'em up, Joe"
and that was in 1987. The bio in "The New Country Music encylopedia" (1993) only mentions one other song I have heard - "Never my love". I never got CMT, except sometimes at work, but the only radio station in the town where I lived in the 1990s was semi-country.

Anyway, rest in peace, Mr. Gosdin.

8. I just pulled up a bunch of his videos on YouTube. That man could sing!
I'm going to have to pick up a few of his CDs.

He had a history of strokes. What a way to go. :(

9. Same problem and about the same age as my father.
Makes me jumpy when the phone rings. :(

He had a voice. He just released a box set last year, so you can get everything at once if you want it. :)
