Guess what I will be drinking later?

2. Yep.
I always love a good tawny port in the dark of winter, but a white port is lovely for summer. If you mix half chilled white port and half tonic water and add a couple slices of lemon...yum! Very refreshing.

4. Ok, please semi-educate me.
I know nothing about port, but I really want to try. Is there a good grocery-store-available white port, or am I going to have to really go look for it?
That sounds good, but this is coming from someone who usually drinks Cabernet and Zinfandel, occasionally Riesling and always Stoli.

5. I've never seen one in a grocery store.
I won't buy the ruby or tawny ports in the grocery store either.

Most white port is essentially the same as a ruby port, except made from white grapes, but some, including the one I bought today, are aged in wood barrels like a tawny port. I like mine very dry, but there are some that are sweeter.

The only place locally I've seen white port is at a family-owned French wine shop; I've never even seen it at the Boise Co-Op, which has the largest wine selection in the area. If you can find one, definitely try it.

9. If you want to try red port
Whiskers Blake is great for the price. If you want to go a step higher but not spend too much money, Taylor Fladgate 10 year old tawny is a good deal. I avoid super market port, but the grocery stores around here are kinda sketch.

Not a big fan of white port either, just personal preference.

11. I was thinking of that song!
Back in the day, my boyfriend sometimes would buy really cheap sweet white port and cut the taste with lemon juice, and sing that song to me. No tonic involved.

12. Hmm.
When I was younger, I lived in the UK (and traveled around northern Europe) for a few years, where I received an extensive practical education in ales, whisky (scotch), sherries, and ports.

I've never encountered white port. And a dry port, no less. Sounds very, very interesting. I'd really like to try some.

I assume that, with the cask aging to which you refer, that it picks up some color from the casks. How dark is it as it comes out of the bottle? I'm sure it isn't as dark as a tawny, but can you compare it to something relatively well known, or to a beer?

13. Here....
Lighter than a typical tawny, not as pale as a true white wine -

17. Thanks for the pic.
It even looks tasty! I'm going to look for some on my next trip to a place with a reasonable selection.
