What is your favorite country song.
Edited on Mon Jun-08-09 03:27 AM by ccharles000
I don"t have many because I don't really like most of it but my favorite song is Reba McEntire's Fancy.

3. I like 'Rose Garden' by Lynn Anderson
I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
There's gotta be a little rain sometimes.
When you take, you gotta give, so live and let live,
Or let go.
I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.

I could promise you things like big diamond rings,
But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover.
So you better think it over.
Well, if sweet-talkin' you could make it come true,
I would give you the world right now on a silver platter,
But what would it matter?
So smile for a while and let's be jolly:
Love shouldn't be so melancholy.
Come along and share the good times while we can.

I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
There's gotta be a little rain sometimes.

Instrumental break.

I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.

I could sing you a tune or promise you the moon,
But if that's what it takes to hold you,
I'd just as soon let you go, but there's one thing I want you to know.
You better look before you leap, still waters run deep,
And there won't always be someone there to pull you out,
And you know what I'm talkin' about.
So smile for a while and let's be jolly:
Love shouldn't be so melancholy.
Come along and share the good times while we can.

I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
There's gotta be a little rain sometimes.

To fade.

Some of the best country music isn't even called country music. Social Distortion's "Somewhere between heaven and Hell" is the loudest honky-tonk record in history, but 99% of mainstream country fans have never heard "Ball and Chain" or "Born to Lose".

By the Stones, Social D and The Byrds, respectively.

There's a lot of very good country out there-- but not all of it is by country artists.

47. What I cannot understand are rock fans who go over to the twangy dark side.
I used to work at my city's civic center and I worked a lot of country concerts. We referred to the most of them as the "pretty boy of the month" country concerts. Even if they were from N.Y. City you put a cowboy hat on them and that magically made them "country". Funny thing is that during the warm-ups the band would be playing old rock songs.

7. Does "King of the Road" count?
I always liked that one.

I know it is Willie Nelson, but "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground" is good too.

I'm pretty sure "Sweet Home Alabama" would fit under "country rock".

I used to listen to country when I was young - into the 70's. About the time that shitwad Ricky Scaggs hit the scene, country went formula - and my that I mean a recipe - two parts cow shit, one part asshole - add Reagan/Bush/False-patriotism - stir well and vomit heavily.

21. I really can't stand country music, but I love David Alan Coe's "You Never Even Called Me
By My Name."

You Never Even Called me by my Name

Well it was all that I could do to keep from cryin'.
Sometimes it seems so useless to remain.
But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'.
You never even called me by my name.

You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings.
And you don't have to call me Charlie Pride.
And you don't have to call me Merle Haggard, anymore.
Even though you're on my fightin' side.

And I'll hang around as long as you will let me.
And I never minded standin' in the rain.
But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'.
You never even called me by my name.

Well, I've heard my name a few times in your phone book.
(Hello, hello.)
And I've seen it on signs where I've played.
But the only time I know, I'll hear David Allan Coe,
Is when Jesus has his final judgement day.

So I'll hang around as long as you will let me.
And I never minded standin' in the rain.
But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'.
You never even called me by my name.

Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song. And he told
< Find more Lyrics on www.mp3lyrics.org/H45 >
me it was the perfect country and western song. I wrote him back a letter
and I told him it was NOT the perfect country and western song, because
he hadn't said anything at all about momma, or trains, or trucks, or
prison, or gettin' drunk.

Well, he sat down and wrote another verse to the song and he sent it to
me and after reading it, I realized that my friend had written the
perfect country and western song. And I felt obliged to include it on
this album. The last verse goes like this here:

Well, I was drunk the day my mom got outta prison.
And I went to pick her up in the rain.
But, before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got runned over by a damned old train.

And I'll hang around as long as you will let me.
And I never minded standin' in the rain.
No, you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'.
You never even called me,
Well I wonder why you don't call me,
Why don't you ever call me by my name?

23. Yup, written by the late great Steve Goodman. That's my
favorite too. Steve Goodman wrote the greatest train song of all time: City of New Orleans, greatest country song of all time: You Never Even Call Me by my Name, and the best baseball song of all time (IMO): A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request. Legend has it that his ashes are buried under home plate at Wrigley Field.

33. For a folkie, Goodman wasn't particulaly political. But he wrote
at least one anti-war song about a young wife losing her husband to Vietnam. (name of song escapes me right now)

I'd say he was a lefty- some of his best friends were Johnny Cash and Jimmy Buffett. DAC is such a mystery I wouldn't put much stock in Steve's friendship with him.

59. "Kickin' In" by Buck Owens
Dwight Yoakam yanked Buck out of his cozy retirement from recording and performing in 1988, which resulted in three final studio albums: "Hot Dog" (1988), "Act Naturally" (1989) and "Kickin' In" (1991). "Kickin' In" turned out to be his final album. He spent the rest of his life performing with the modern-day "Buckaroos" in his Bakersfield club, "Crustal Palace."

It's a song about a guy who loved and lost but will probably take her memory to the grave. Been there, seen that, done that...he name was Nanette.

"Kickin' In" was written by Roger Murrah and Keith Stegal.

CHORUS: There goes her memory, kickin' in
It's that same old hurt again
That makes me crazy now and then
It's her memory, kickin' in

I tell these arms to stop reaching for her
Tell these hands that we can't touch her anymore
But my mind keeps playing games
And my eyes keep seeing things
That look just like her standing in the door

CHORUS

Well I threw away the pictures and the letters
But these old walls still echo things she used to say
And when I close my eyes
I can see her in my mind
Oh it's almost like she never went away

CHORUS

Some off the top of my head:

Pancho and Lefty - Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard
Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
Jackson - Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash
Rose Colored Glasses - John Conlee
Mr. Jones - Big Al Downing
Phantom 309 - Red Sovine
Marie LaVeau - Bobby Bare
It's Only Make Believe - Conway Twitty
Addicted - Dan Seals
Jolene - Dolly Parton
The Dance - Garth Brooks
Choices - George Jones

I like lots of the newer (mostly 80's and 90's) country-pop too, although not all of it.
