Recommend a brand of hair dye
I'm dyeing my hair red in the next couple of weeks. It's for a costume (Misty from Pokemon), but I was planning to dye it anyway. I have medium brown hair and don't want to bleach it first, but want to get a noticeable red color (rather than just dark red when the light hits it a certain way.)

So, what's a good brand to use?

1. I never had good luck with over-the-counter hair coloring
Edited on Thu Jun-11-09 07:27 PM by Haole Girl
It makes me angry that the best stuff requires a cosmetology license. :-(

Maybe it's my hair, but every shade I tried resulted in brassy orange/brown. Oh, oh, except for the time it came out flat black. But I don't even want to talk about that!

Good luck. One brand I never tried, that a man who owns a salon in Miami recommended to me recently, is Garnier. If I ever get brave enough to try it again, myself, I'll try that one.

:hi:

2. As a natural brunette who is now a redhead...
I LOVE Garnier. Have been using it regularly for about a year now. Works great. I use the roasted coffee, a nice auburn-ish color.

Hope that you find something you like.

3. I used to use the L'Oreal creme stuff
it doesn't drip. The color was fine, it was easy to do, I like the result. But I stopped mainly because I got tired of the new growth showing up so often and got lazy. Now I'm nearly all gray and I think about dying it every once in a while then I remember why I stopped.

4. I use Nutrisse. It lasts about 3-4 weeks.
Nice color, and makes your hair soft and manageable.

5. what color do you mean by "red"?
"red" could be anything from purple to orange.

if you mean fire engine red, I suggest manic panic. without bleaching it won't stand out quite as bright, but it'll still be noticeable.

6. I don't know too much about it,
having gone silver streaked starting at seventeen, but my friends tell me that they always have their hair colored with vegetable-based dyes because of the high lymphoma rates associated with dark hair dye.

It's the second-highest cancer killer in China, where EVERYONE has black, black hair.

So, have fun, but be careful....................

7. The best for me has been Preference (Loreal)
They have more reds to choose from than other brands, too.

9. Go to a hair stylist. I wouldn't chance it because it can turn orange.
I admit that I am a bit picky about my hair. My very best friend is a hair stylist, so I am lucky.

10. It's difficult to find now but if you can
try the Funky Cherry shade of L'Oreal Color Pulse. It's not permanent but it is noticeable and it lasts about 10 washes. Red dye can be harder to maintain than other colors so you'd have to dye it often anyways if you wanted to maintain the look.
