Gross question: Why do siblings lick each other?

I thought this was just some perverse thing in my family, when my sisters would do it to gross me out, but when I saw the movie "National Lampoon's Vacation" I realized it was not unusual but probably common. EDIT: It also appears in the movie "Hotel New-Hampshire" based on the John Irving novel.

The quickest way my sisters could disgust me beyond belief, during our vacations, was to lick me or spread saliva to me, by sucking their thumbs and wiping it on me, or some other manner...

Is this a common thing?

What does it mean?

Does it have some Darwinian, evolutionary significance?

Now that so many years have gone by, I can view it with a sense of humor, but I am fascinating to know why this might be some sort of inherent drive, and why?

Those siblings who do are probably just trying to gross each other out. Boogers are much more effective, though.

You're siblings. You find the easiest most efficient way to annoy the hell out of each other, and when you're bored, amuse yourself annoying your brother or sister.
