But for those of us "out there" it holds more meaning than you might imagine. I have effectively eliminated 75% of the people I meet based on political stance (I know you have a different experience, and I use your example always when it comes to judging a man's intentions, but I am not you and would have more than serious trouble dealing with a republican mate (David wasn't a repuke, no matter what he told me).

My wife insists on calling herself a Republican, when everything about her pegs her as a right-leaning moderate Democrat.
