Michael Bay Finally Made An Art Movie
Michael Bay Finally Made An Art Movie

Critical consensus on Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen is overwhelmingly negative. But the critics are wrong. Michael Bay used a squillion dollars and a hundred supercomputers' worth of CG for a brilliant art movie about the illusory nature of plot.

Oh, and I would warn you that there'll be spoilers in this review — except that, really, since I still have no idea what actually happened in this movie, I'm not sure how much I can spoil it.

Since the days of Un Chien Andalou and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, filmmakers have reached beyond meaning. But with this summer's biggest, loudest movie, Michael Bay takes us all the way inside Caligari's cabinet. And once you enter, you can never emerge again. I saw this movie two days ago, and I'm still living inside it. Things are exploding wherever I look, household appliances are trying to kill me, and bizarre racial stereotypes are shouting at me.

Transformers: ROTF has mostly gotten pretty hideous reviews, but that's because people don't understand that this isn't a movie, in the conventional sense. It's an assault on the senses, a barrage of crazy imagery. Imagine that you went back in time to the late 1960s and found Terry Gilliam, fresh from doing his weird low-fi collage/animations for Monty Python. You proceeded to inject Gilliam with so many steroids his penis shrank to the size of a hair follicle, and you smushed a dozen tabs of LSD under his tongue. And then you gave him the GDP of a few sub-Saharan countries. Gilliam might have made a movie not unlike this one.

I thought this review was interesting to read. But you don't have to take my word for it!

And so does Spaz Luhrmann.

2. I love that critics even take the time to review Bay's movies
do they possibly think Bay is going to surprise and do an Oscar-worthy movie? They know and we all know that Bay ONLY makes popcorn action movies. He truly does excel at making flashy, over-the-top action flicks. I loved Transformers and I can't wait to see the second one. I've seen most of his movies and have enjoyed them all because I never go in expecting Shakespeare.

I loved how one critic went from saying Bay thinks we're all stupid to saying that he (the critic) thinks anyone who enjoys Bay's movies is stupid. Critics need to either ignore Bay's movies or go in expecting a flashy, popcorn movie.

4. I'm with you.
I don't go to see a movie like this expecting anything but what it is. And for me, personally, the only reason to go see a movie in the theater is if it looks better on the big screen.

5. I really enjoyed Transfomers, but Transfomers II was AWFUL, IMHO.

I kept turning to my husband and mouthing "This is TERRIBLE."

And I did not go in expecting Schindler's List. All week, I kept telling my husband to ignore the reviews...basically saying what you are saying. Hell, I liked the movie Armageddon! I fully expected a movie thin on plot but tons of fun. I like a good popcorn movie. This movie failed miserably. Bay managed to make a movie about kickass robots boring. Truly a feat.

6. Well, anything staring Shia LaBoob has to be an action flick because
there is no expectation of acting involved...

Really, when was the last time any kid star that came out of the Disney Acting Style of muggin and rolling eye take end up making a good movie. Well Jody Foster, but I still don't think she is that great an actress. She pick some great rolls but her acting, not so much...

My nephew wants me to go see the movie with him...

I said dude, I love you but that is asking just too much.

8. "Starring Shia LeBouef" is nature's way of saying "Don't watch this film"
He's not a bad actor, but he's gotta have the shittiest agent in the history of Hollywood.

10. He went from being an unknown straight to Transfomers and Indiana Jones.
Two huge blockbuster franchises.

11. Yeah, his agent must laugh all the way to the bank.
Good movie, bad movie, does he really care as long as the checks don't bounce?

Doubt it.

Like when a critic asked Michael Caine why he took so many lousy parts. He said something like "It was work, and I'm a 'working' actor, and they paid on time. Most actors are home sitting on their arse waiting for the perfect part."

14. Art is usually creating something new; not remaking and camping something up as light entertainment.
