Weirdest thing to happen in the TV series LOST

In the sixth episode of the 1st season titled 'House of the Rising Sun', Michael is chopping bamboo with an ax, later he uses the ax to free Jin from his handcuffs. Why is there an ax on airplane?

2. That Oceanic flight #815 was never canceled?
That is weird considering all the wacky adventures the ensued after their unscheduled stopover on the island.
