I want to make my own avatar...but
I can't seem to get the .gif down to 1k, anyone have any usefule suggestions for ways to cut bits from it? (I'm at the required 48x48 pixels, and have 1.1 kbs)

Most of us are using Avatars slightly larger than one K - at the moment the Software has a certain allowance built in.

If you don't want to cheat: your picture should do well as a .gif. With 16 colors it will be under 1k .

This was posted in an earlier html tricks thread. (I've been working on a compliation of the best DU html tricks, which I am almost ready to post.)

Resizing a larger image:

Resizing a larger image to a smaller image using the width & length attributes will make your image visually smaller, however it will carry the same file/disk size as the larger image.
There are also nifty little online image editors. For some quick viewing or editing of images, use IrfanView, a freeware product. There is an online image editor that enables you to keep the same physical size if you want but lets you take the file size down quite small. For example, that Rumsfeld/Hussein photo can be reduced down to 10k using this program: http://www.myimager.com

I reduced an image by 31% (color reduced to "20" at the site I posted above. Let's see is I can post it here:
