Anyone else miss the Daily Thread in the Lounge?
I was just posting in this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=8975700&mesg_id=8975700

and thinking "Wow, it's been a long time since I told complete strangers what brand of soap I use."

Whatever happened to the daily thread?

I'm way too lazy and irresponsible to bring it back myself, but someone should. It was a great way to get to know new people.

1. I'm not sure if I remember that or not?
When was the last time it was seen and what was it?

2. Probably a few years ago...
I think ZenLefty or ZombyWoof wrote them? And then maybe NewYawker took them over before converting it to the Milestone thread?

It was a thread posted in the lounge each day where birthdays and milestones were celebrated, new people were asked to check in and then there was usually a quiz with about five questions on pressing topics like "How many eggs can you eat in one sitting?" or "If you could ban any expression, which one would you ban?"

It was like a little Lounge Reader's Digest.

Can't believe nobody remembers the daily thread ;(

Here's one:

Essentially the process usually involved one of the Lounge moderators (I think we used to have a roster but sometimes it came down to whoever was available on a specific day or week) starting a thread highlighting birthdays, milestones and achievements, providing some facts or trivia and asking a few questions. Later, we used to have moderators from other forums host the threads. All of them did an excellent, first-class job

While I (and the other moderators involved) used to greatly enjoy doing them and we loved interacting with Loungers and adding that personal touch to the Lounge, it sometimes required a lot of patience, time and effort to put the threads together. First of all, you would have to collect the informations on the birthdays and milestones for a particular day (NY99 was excellent in this role), then you would quite often have to research facts and trivia for your thread (and it was hard to come up with something new on some days), then you would have often have to put some effort into including some new and interesting graphics and then you had to think of trivia questions (and sometimes it was hard to come up with new ideas for this as well). We would then usually monitor the thread and reply to every post. This process could take ages and came on top of all our other moderating duties (keeping in mind that the Lounge is one of the busiest forums on DU next to LBN and GD/GDP) and in addition to whatever else was going on in our personal lives as well. It became quite strenuous and challenging to keep these threads going and to think of something new everyday, even as much as we wanted to. So eventually we decided to take a break from doing it. Later, NY99 came up with the excellent idea of starting milestone threads instead and Strong Atheist has done a magnificent job of keeping it going

I miss doing the Lounge threads but, on the other hand, I remember how tedious it used to be at times to do them on top of all the other responsibilities we had. Now, we have a whole load of these other types of threads as Strong Atheist's milestone threads and Miss HoneyChurch's "Good Morning" threads that essentially fill much of the same role -to provide a sense of community in the Lounge.

I got to know a lot of Loungers through my "Day in the Lounge" threads and I will always be eternally grateful for the kindness, support, encouragement and friendship they gave me. It was always a pleasure replying to each one of them and I felt privileged to have had the chance to get to know them a little better. For all I've said about how much work it was putting the Lounge threads together, they did provide me with some of the fondest memories that I have of my time on DU
