Patricia Heaton Fails at Math on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire
Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 07:49 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
Worth watching for Regis's face and the audience's pity-plause.

The question was:

"If a euro is worth $1.50, five euros is worth what?"

a. thirty quarters
b. fifty dimes
c. seventy nickles
d. ninety pennies

She chose her husband as her lifeline "because he's European".

1. Having been a game show contestant I can tell you your mind
can go blank--all the lights, audience, the adrenaline--it's a strange environment
if you're not used to being able to focus.

Still--they give those contestants a lot of time to think about answers. Anybody
getting to the contestant level on that show ought to be able to convert money.

5. This woman was on a sitcom shot before a live audience for nine years
Although I understand your point, I think we can apply Occam's Razor to this and safely assume that she's just an idiot.

9. She was scripted. It's very different to be in a situation where you're
basically improvising--especially if the topic is something you never think about.

2. How long do they get to answer?
I havent watched this show in awhile but dont they just sit there and wait for them to answer? I suck at math but give me as much time as I want and I could figure it out!

3. Well, I'm no math whiz either, but. . .
that was just about enough to make me cry.

But I can see how "panic attack" can set in and the word "Euros" sent her mind into a catatonic state.

Sure, it coulda happened to meeeee . . ..

4. A. Final Answer
I didn't have to use a calculator, or the right-wing twit's husband to figure that out.

6. The answer is A, but I wasn't under stress figuring it out
If the answers had just been dollar amounts, I could see laughing at her, but the answers are meant to be confusing.

7. True...it does require a little thinking...
First you have to figure out that 5 Euros would be $7.50, then think about which of the four coin combinations equals that amount.

8. $1.50 = six quarters. 6 x 5 = 30.

10. Eliminate the impossible. What's left is the answer.
Neither 5 bucks nor 90 cents is the correct answer, so chuck 'em.

20 nickels is a dollar, so 70 nickels is 3 and a half dollars. That ain't $7.50 either.

You don't even have to do the math on 30 quarters to know it's the only answer left.

Glad to know some of my math knowledge is still in tact. :-)
