I've taken up golf....Does that make me an asshole?
My girlfriend and I have started getting golf lessons while we're living in Australia......I've always quite liked the idea of being able to go out and play a round when I feel like it, and I don't think I'm going to make it a major hobby or anything.

The place where we're getting lessons is amazing - there are kangaroos all over the course and it's the most amazing countryside. Luckily, as it's Australia, there's no "Country Club" mentality and people are very down-to-earth.

I'm taking more of a Happy Gilmore / Caddyshack approach to things rather than a George W Bush approach, but I'm wondering whether even vaguely participating in this sport might make me an asshole....

What do you think?

Any golfing tips?

P.

1. keep taking lessons
if you try to teach yourself and don't learn the proper fundamentals, you'll never be any good.

you're not an asshole; me and all my golf buddies are liberals.... :)

2. If you consider me an asshole, then YES!!!
I play golf often, but I play at municipal courses and I walk.

There are plenty of good liberals on this site and around the country that golf. Consider if you will, one Bill Clinton.

There are plenty of assholes who golf, but not all golfers are assholes.

Tips - S-L-O-W D-O-W-N. Find the rhythm that works for you and stick to it. Also, try NOT to kill the ball. The lessons will help. :-)

5. Jack Nicklaus
I think Jack Nicklaus is a Democrat...I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. They're not all right wingers...though a good percentage are.

3. Not an Asshole...
A masochist maybe, but not an Asshole. Golf can be the most fun, and most frustrating thing at the same time. One minute you will be on cloud nine, and the next you will be breaking your clubs in half over your knee. Good Luck !!!

4. I enjoy watching it from time to time
I tried playing before, but I am not good. It is terribly difficult to get decent at it, a lot of practice.

I was a big fan when Tom Watson was winning way back, I really liked him. I do have a record sheet (on my computer) of Tiger Woods wins, because I am curious if he will be able to get close to Nicklaus's all time record for wins in majors.

6. Of course not.
It's a game. Playing it doesn't make you an asshole. Even in the US, there are plenty of public, non-country club courses to play on. You don't have to be an elitist or anything. It's great.

Just the thought that playing a game somehow makes you an asshole is unbelievable.

9. Enjoy it!
It's a sport you can play for the rest of your life. Like Bagger Vance said, it's a game you can't win, you can only play.

Like someone said above, if you're just now starting, don't try to teach yourself. You'll get frustrated very quickly. Go to a qualified pro and take a series of lessons. You'll start playing well quickly.

14. That would be great!
And yes, when it cools off. I was stupid enough to play last Wednesday when the temp was around 102 and the heat index was around 110. Big mistake even when riding. We're playing tomorrow afternoon and it's supposed to be around 88 for a high.

Mid-September or into October would be a great time. Let's keep it in mind.

15. I play first thing in the a.m.
When it's about 80 degrees and 80% humidity. No pounding heat, but your shirt is soaked in about 2 minutes. x(

October is a great time!

17. I have only golfed once, while my husband is a major golfer..okay, he
golfs once a year because it costs a lot of $$$. Me, I made it to the third hole and gave up. I was basically comic relief for the rest of the group. It's very frustating if you don't know what the heck you are doing. Good luck and have fun!!

19. Golfers are assholes only when:
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 07:49 AM by The Backlash Cometh
(1) They're in politics and they allow themselves to get smoozed and sold by business constitutents who lobby them on the fairways.

or

(2) When they're old farts who complain because their precious country clubs are getting over-ridden with locals and young Tiger Woods wannabes.

23. go to the driving range
Chicks dig men who can hit a ball a long way.

:)

Then just tell them to go watch the birds or something while you're trying to putt.
