What music have you listened to lately?
Raveonettes - In And Out Of Control (I'll have to get this! I heard it at a full album listening party. It's their best yet! "Bang!" is one of the very best songs this year.)

Also heard Paramore - Brand New Eyes and Miranda Lambert - Revolution at full album listening parties, and also highly recommend!

My disappointment was with the new Nerina Pallot songs. Change can be good, but not when you completely change what was good about you.

1. I recently discovered the Collins Kids.
I think they are the most talented kid band ever. At least they beat the heck out of Old Skull.

2. Larry and Lorrie were incredible weren't they
There's a "related video" ( a couple of em) on at least the Stagger Lee and Hoy Hoy Hoy you tube videos that's titled "documentary about Larry and Lorrie" that is taken from a PBS documentary called Women of Rockabilly from a few years ago. It starts out with Charlene Arthur, but mainly is split into four sections; Wanda Jackson, Janis Martin, Lorrie (and of course Larry) Collins ( was he a bad ass on the guitar or what?... and just really a little kid too) and Brenda Lee. I suspect that it still may be broadcast on occasion during PBS's fund drives.... If you're interested, you maybe could get information about it from your local PBS station. I haven't checked; but I suppose it's also possible that by typing in those names on you tube, you might be able to piece together the whole program (???).........your musically obsessed, too much time on his hands DU buddy, abq e streeter

17. Hey abq!
Yeah those Collins Kids just put a big ol grin on my face every time I hear 'em. I saw the Collins Kids story on youtube but not the parts about the other artists.

I have read that a girl named Jo Anne Campbell was a great rockabilly chick but the only songs I've heard of hers are kinda lame bubblegum stuff. Do you know what songs of Ms Campbell's I should look for? I do like Wanda, but not as much as Lorrie and Larry. I should correct something I wrote earlier: The Collins Kids were fantastic, period. (not just fantastic for their age) When I listen to their cd or watch 'em on youtube I am on cloud 9. Hoy Hoy Hoy!

I will look around for the Women of Rocabilly doc. Have a good one abq, hope to talk to you soon.

23. I actually had never heard of Jo Ann Campbell, but just checked a few songs out
on you tube. Some were definitely very bubblegummy, but you can imagine how much artistic control she had over what she did ( pretty much none I'm sure), but I like her voice. That "answer" song to Wolverton Mountain is pretty corny, but so much so that I like it. There's one called Tall Boy that's pretty much rockabilly with a great honkin sax solo, but yeah, most of the others I listened to were obviously the record company wanting her to be a teen pop singer. I like her version of Teenage Idol, although no one will ever outdo Ricky Nelson's original of it........ Back then , if you think about it, the producers put corny pop arrangements on lots of cool stuff, including Elvis and Buddy Holly. It's just what they thought sounded commercial I guess. But thanks for turning me on to her; I literally had never heard of her somehow.

25. I recently read a book about rockabilly by Billy Poore.
Billy was right on about great rockabilly and heaped a ton of praise on Jo Ann. According to Jo Ann, you are right on about the record company wanting her to record the bubblegum stuff. She even said how she never played those songs live and only played her rockabilly favorites. I've never seen one of her records so I might have to track down a cd or something to find the good stuff she did.

I still have not heard Ricky Nelson's Teenage Idol but boy was I wrong about him. The man was a rocker! As a fan, I sure wish Lorrie Collins would've stayed with Ricky instead of eloping with a much older man and effectively ending the Collins Kids. They had magic and then it was gone. If you want to see a sad clip, check out Larry Collins Sweet Chile on youtube. Joe Maphis introduces Larry for the first time without his sister and you can just tell that all of 'em are kind of bummed out.

27. The new Om is very refreshing.
I was a little bored with them on their last CD. It was good, but all their stuff was exactly the same, song after song. Now with Emil Amos from the Grails in the band replacing Chris Hakius their music has taken on a new direction without losing that Om sound (if you haven't heard the Grails yet do yourself a favor and check them out). I think he's been the shot in the arm that Om needed.

I don't know if you brought up The Hidden Hand by accident or if you already know this, but Wino is in Shrinebuilder, which is him, Dale Crover from the Melvins, Scott Kelly of Neurosis, and Al Cisneros from Om. It mixes all the guys styles into one, without sounding derivative of any of them. It's a pretty cool CD.

Here's a Grails tune...

22. The Noisettes
I heard this rocking song in the background of a Dick's Sporting Goods commercial where this woman is singing "Don't Give Up" while a guy is being chased by a wild boar, wolves, and a bear. Then I searched iTunes for songs titled "Don't Give Up" and started searching YouTube for performances and videos. My third attempt hit the jackpot.

Then I followed up and on Pandora by programming in a Noisettes channel. Wow. Simply, wow. Think Amy Winehouse, except with a larger range.

I'm probably late to the party, but that is so cool to hear the individual instruments and voices from the "bounce" 4 track.

Also Roger Waters doing Another Brick in The Wall Pt. II, and the version in Berlin w/Cindi Lauper singing it.

31. right now: The Cat Empire
"So Many Nights". They have a sweetness.

Lately ...
Lucinda Williams - "Little Honey". She has a growl.

Sam Cooke - "Hits". Good compilation but sadly missing "You Send Me" and "Change Gonna Come".

Dirty Three - "Whatever You Love, You Are". They have passion, they go exploring, they like a long, slow build. But they're better live.
