It wasn't like anybody ever doubted he was gay, and we ALL knew he wore a toupee. This stuff was just obvious to us even when we were self absorbed teens.
What was SO amazing was that he chose to do it via a mass email a week AFTER the reunion. The email was full of stuff about his life--even down to the sexual abuse he suffered as a kid, and the subsequent shame. It was such an intense email that when I read it my first thought was "Gawd has this guy's life sucked." Then I started to wonder about his safety.
I have talked to other classmates since then, and they all had pretty much the same response--they were looking for his obit after such a wide spread distribution of that email.
On a happier note, my daughter will be taking Spanish next year from the same lady that I took 4 years of Spanish from in high school. I ran into her at an open house at the jr high and it was just a wonderful reunion. I was overjoyed to see her and we got caught up (kinda.) She had to giggle a bit when I told her about running a Bi-lingual legal service hotline for a few years. We are already making plans for a fiesta for the kids next year!
I think it is a shame that more teachers don't have the opportunity to hear from students how much they impacted on their lives. Good for you for going!
