Why do some women wear clothes they can't walk in?
yesterday i was at the gym and saw an awards show on one of the TV's. it was muted so i didn't hear what was said but Mariah Carey (i think) went up to get an award and she couldn't even walk in her dress. it was a mermaid style dress and it was so long and her heels were so high that she needed help getting to the podium.

why do women do that? it isn't like men don't make fashion mistakes, they do but i have never seen a man wear an outfit he couldn't walk in but i have countless times seen women do this to themselves even in every day life. heels too high or outfits so tight or wacky that they can't walk comfortably. i don't get it.

1. My rule has been to never wear anything you can't run in.

So: another strike against mobility.

6. Yeah, I saw it on TV this morning
It looked like she may have had one to many glasses of champagne, and it look like she was on the verge of admitting that, but couldn't think of a way of saying it without coming off as a lush.

4. In her case she forgot to bring along the breathalyzer accessory.
the outfit actually enabled her to at least stand upright. }(

5. A lot of women's fashion is designed by men
And while I'm not sure it's done consciously, I think there's something in the male brain that makes them want to bind up women, probably for mating purposes. I don't think every male brain acts on that evolutionary instinct, but I think it's there.

It's not as though there isn't a history of this... foot binding in China, and the rings around a woman's neck to elongate it (but god forbid she should try to turn her head), corsets that make it hard for a woman to breathe, even having to lug a purse around (seriously, they don't make pants without pockets for men).

And why do women buy into it? Who knows? Maybe it's an evolutionary thing too--the female instinct to mate driving her to want to be caught and kept. Or maybe it's the same women who are into the bondage thing. Again, not all women act on the instinct, but...

I'll never figure out the fashion industry. Especially when it comes to clothing for women. I'm not sure there is any other industry that designs its products for 2% of its customer base.

I don't want to this to start a flame war. It's a theory, and it's not meant to offend anyone. I wrote it using generalities on purpose. Not all men fit into one mold. Not all women fit into one mold. But I do think that despite a need for equality (legal and social) there are human survival instincts that manifest themselves in strange ways, especially as society changes. It used to be that women were kept home and that they could vote or own property. Then they could get jobs but they wouldn't be paid as much. They were told that they couldn't use birth control or have abortions. I'm not sure it was entirely about a power grab.

7. Actually she really is a mermaid and you should feel bad for making fun of her
trying to be like the humans and walk around like us and stuff. She probably had on a really short skirt and someone at the table spilled water on her legs exposing her big fish leg thing and she was probably really embarrassed that it happened right then when she won an award, but it would have been more awkward for her to just sit there at her table than to at least try to act normal. Have you not seen Splash??? Watch it again and maybe next time you'll be more sensitive to the mer-people who are trying to get by in this world.
