2. From Russia With Love as the best.
Moonraker or Octopussy as the worst.

For the record, I liked Timothy Dalton as Bond....

3. worst...hmm...does the Peter Sellers' Casino Royale count?
'Cause if so, that wins, hands down, for me.

If not...I'll have to think about it. Probably one of the Roger Moore movies. I liked For Your Eyes Only a lot, and a couple were ok, but some were...not good, IMO. But then, I always thought that the only thing Moore did really well as Bond was deliver the stupid one-liners (which Pierce Brosnan was particularly bad at).

Best...well...I REALLY liked the new Casino Royale. A lot. I really liked For Your Eyes Only, as I said above, and From Russia With Love. Those 3 are probably my favorites.

I like a lot of Bond movies. I've seen all of them, and many of them multiple times.

4. Best: Die Another Day - Clever plot and Halle Berry.
Worst: On Her Majesty's Secret Service
George Lazenby was totally wrong for the part, and although I like Telly Savalas, he botched Blofeld.

25. I actually like OHMSS, generally Moore was the worst Bond
I think Lazenby was in a no-win situation, first replacing Connery and then having his debut Bond film being the most dark and cynical of the series. And the shock ending didn't help him either. Yeah he's not the best actor around, but he's not the worst either. I think if he stayed with the series he would have improved greatly, certainly better than Moore. And any film with Diana Rigg can't be all that bad.

Moore's only good film was The Spy Who Loved Me. Live And Let Die was probably the worst. It doesn't even seem like a Bond film.

30. Agree here. OHMSS was one of my favorites.
This may be Bond blasphemy, but I don't see how Connery could've pulled off the romantic scenes any better.

I also thought Moore was terrible, although I did like For Your Eyes Only.

A large part of this is the fact that they kept him on too long - he was 58 when his last Bond movie came out. In Octopussy and A View To A Kill, he looked way too old to be playing a believable James Bond.

31. It's not the acting that ruins that movie
Rigg, Lazenby, Savalas - they're all pretty good

the problem is the editing - it doesn't 'flow' like other Bond movies. It jerks from scene to scene without the right transitions

40. In fairness to Moore, the Bond series was clearly going in a more
campy direction before he even signed on to Bond. Connery's last official Bond film - "Diamonds are Forever" - is much more like the '70s Moore films rather than the '60s Connery films.

In reply to the OP, I would say the best was "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and the worst was "The Man with the Golden Gun" - with "License to Kill" a close second.

23. I liked Dalton as Bond.
I realize I may be the only one in the world who does.

I found the premise of License to be a bit rushed, but once the motivation was established, I thought the rest of the movie was good. Given Bond's own experience with marriage, I could see how the murder of his best friend's wife would set him off.

and in fact I liked it a lot. One of the few problems with it, however, is how bad of an actor the guy playing Felix is - just awful.

8. Worst, Moonraker. Best: Quantum of Solace.
Yeah, not everyone agrees on my favorite. To me it was the smartest plot, the best dialogue, strong characters who weren't cartoonish impossibilities, very good acting (Judi Dench is amazing)... It's like John Le Carre, Ian Flemming, and Arthur Conan Doyle rolled into a "House of Cards" script.

Maybe because of all the "mod" clothing. I see that date, 1967, and I think more along the lines of dirty hippies than mod brits.

Were all just painfully bad.

I really love Diamonds are Forever. Goldfinger may be a better movie but the henchmen in Diamonds are Forever are just priceless. Bruce Glover (Crispen Glover's dad) and a jazz bassist named Putter Smith as Wint and Kidd steal the movie.

26. My takes
I'm slowly rewatching the Bonds.

Best so far:
Goldfinger
Dr. No
Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace - since they're an extended story
The Man With the Golden Gun - I found Moore's first two outings light, but he came across stronger in this one.

Honourable mentions:
On Her Majesty's Secret Service - better than I thought
From Russia With Love

Worst:
Probably a latter Moore outing. I'm thinking the one with Grace Jones - whichever one that is.

I originally saw Dalton's forays on VHS, so I spare judgement until I see them again in widescreen with rich sound - whenever.

27. Best: The ones closest to the books. Worst: Most of the ones with Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan
Closest to the books, and my favorites:

From Russia With Love
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (talk shit about Lazenby all you want - he did a good job and this was a great movie)
For Your Eyes Only
The Living Daylights
Casino Royale

The dumbest and most ridiculous:

Live & Let Lie (felt more like watching Shaft)
The Man With The Golden Gun
Moonraker
A View To A Kill
Die Another Day

33. Goldfinger best, View to a Kill worst
Granted, "Moonraker" was pretty damned bad, but "View To A Kill" featured a Roger Moore James Bond who was clearly out of shape and past his prime. He never should have made the film. I don;t know if it would have been better with a different Bond...it was so disjointed, like to movies slammed together to make one.

35. Best: From Russia With Love Worst: A View To A Kill
I cannot deride A View To A Kill enough. Sir Roger is totally past it (though, in fairness, I don't think I'd be in any hurry to give up playing James Bond), the story is unimaginative (it's basically Goldfinger with the serial numbers filed off), the pacing is miserable (that fire truck chase goes on forever), and even Christopher Walken seems tired and subdued.

42. Swimming completely against the tide here,
Edited on Tue Feb-02-10 06:36 AM by Lord Tredegars Macaw
but somebody has to speak up for old Rog. He was an immensely successful James Bond. Yes, he played the role with tongue firmly in cheek (not always his own cheek admittedly) and you got the feeling that he was always, always, in on the joke. All the Bond actors played the role differently, from Dalton's angst-driven performance, to Craig's all-action brutality. Moore was the Gentleman Spy.

Best: The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger

Worst: Licence To Kill (just TOO Miami-Vice-ish) or the abysmal Die Another Day

Also thought On Her Majesty's Secret Service was one of the better films with Lazenby pretty solid in the role, and, yes, although Moonraker was awful in places (the Bondola, double-taking pigeons, etc.) it did have some wonderful MOMENTS.

The classic Bond pheasant shooting scene:

Hugo Drax: You missed, Mr. Bond.
(sniper falls from tree)
James Bond: Did I?

Plus, who can forget some of the lines spouted by Michael Lonsdale's Drax?:

"May I press you to a cucumber sandwich?"

"Look after Mr Bond. See that some harm comes to him."

"At least I shall have the pleasure of putting you out of my misery."

"Mr. Bond, you persist in defying my efforts to provide an amusing death for you."

"James Bond. You appear with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season." (I love that one)

When you add Q's infamous "I think he's attempting re-entry, sir!" line to the mix, you will see that Moonraker joins the so-bad-its-good pantheon which contains many of the Roger Moore Bonds. The thing is: Sir Roger got away with it with a twinkle, whereas Pierce Brosnan so often did not.
