Look, I don't condone closing schools on a whim, but I live in this area, and it's insane to keep the schools open in what has been an historic storm. If any kids are hurt or worse, heads need to roll. Awful decision.

2. Educational insanity!
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/local-breaking-news/#schools2

Almost every other school district is closed..

And to get even better -- WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON...

The DC mayor and public school chancellor must have been out of the snow (or in the snow) too long....

4. Not "Almost" every other school district is closed. They are ALL closed.
This has everything to do with Fenty's re-election, and NOTHING to do with the safety of the kids or the staff.

3. When I was in Junior High School,
there was one day when every other neighboring jurisdiction was closed, but Montgomery County (Maryland) Schools were open with no transportation. My mother said that there was no way I was going to school that day. I, of course, didn't argue with her.

Needless to say, it worked out well.

5. I saw a report where his stated goal
was that everyone would get to work on Monday. Guess he also meant that all kids, regardless of whether or not it was safe, would also get to school.

IMO, bad decision.

6. Rhee is trying to show that she is a tough administrator
and not intimidated by anything, including the weather. She has been criticized recently because the DC school system hasn't improved as rapidly as people wanted. I feel sorry for the teachers who will now have to struggle to get to work and find that they have virtually no students to teach. I don't know how people are going to get to schools - DC Metro is only running underground service tomorrow and that will be subject to delays. And yes, there is another storm on the way. Oh be still my beating heart.
