A long-time cigar smoker taught me the secret of the best light: don't light it like it was a cigarette, hold the cigar in one hand and the lighter in the other, then put the flame a little way from the foot of the cigar. It will toast rather than ignite the tobacco, and you'll get a nice gentle light and the best flavor.
When I went to the Carolinas Cigar Crawl (an event they used to hold, in which smokers would meet in Greensboro, board a chartered bus and hit every cigar store between Greensboro and Raleigh before going back to Greensboro) I had my BBQ lighter with me. The intent is to smoke lots of cigars and socialize, so lots of lighting is required. By the time the event was over all of them had those lighters. They're inexpensive yet highly effective.
