I swear I thought squirrels hibernated
But there they are out back tromping around in the snow and running up and down trees. Have I been missing something or is this that global warming deal at work?

2. No shit? Well now that I think about it
I guess they'd be kind of hard to round up for turkey day if they did.

4. Tobin - wild turkeys do fly. They sound like a 767 taking off.
If you take I-90 through New York, be careful because they fly across the road two or three at a time and they can take out your windshield!

5. I've seen some wild turkeys by the road in my travels in southeast Ohio
They are some pretty big birds. Fortunately, I've never hit one.

6. Your real problem would probably be watching for autos swerving to avoid the turkeys!

16. I've never been close to a 767 taking off, but
wild turkeys have lifted off the ground within 15 feet of me.
It's pretty impressive, huge wings flapping....the sound is "WHUP, WHUP, WHUP, WHUP," fairly slowly.

3. Several species of squirrels do hibernate.
Much depends upon area, temperatures and food supply. Our tree rats are up and out.

Wild turkeys fly, not well, but they can roost in trees at night.

10. I guess I'm not as air headed as I thought I was
I probably was watching the Discovery channel or something when I heard that some squirrels hibernate. I don't know if our guys do and they just got hungry and woke up early. We've still got a month of winter ahead of us.

14. Did a bit more googling.
Three types of squirrels: Tree, ground and flying. Tree have bushy tails (probably works as a parachute) and they don't hibernate. Ground have bare tails and they do hibernate or at least go dormant. Flying explain themselves and being tree dwellers most likely don't. In urban and suburban areas tree squirrels are the norm.

So every one is right. Ta ta!

8. Well, the squirrels in my
area certainly are not hibernating. I have bird feeders out, and recently (out of necessity) bought one that is (ahem) squirrel proof. Well . . . now the squirrels still climb the shepherds hook where the feeder(s) resides, shake the feeder, and then jump down and eat the seed. I'm struggling between admiring their ingenuity and despising them for their selfishness. LOL!

11. Yeah, they're crafty little critters
Tough, too. I've seen one fall about 30 feet out of a tree, bounce about 2 feet off the ground, get on its feet and hop away like nothing had happened.

13. They hibernate, but not for the whole winter straight through
They wake up several times to eat. Or so I have heard
