'Torchwood' exclusive: Would U.S. version turn Capt. Jack straight?
snip

”I hope wherever goes that the show stays the same,” says the openly gay Scottish thesp. “The last thing I would want would be for Jack to become this heterosexual, straight hero. He’s an omnisexual guy. He likes men, women, aliens, whatever. I think we should continue going down that route.”

Any effort to de-gay Capt. Jack would be followed by a “really big discussion,” Barrowman stresses, adding that it would ultimately be up to series creator Russell T. Davies and producing partner Julie Gardner to fight that battle.

1. Jack would screw anything that moves.
He can't be limited by gender.

2. Kind of a moot point, I think.
If it isn't American Idol, Fox won't promote it. Dead before it starts. Not even sure if Lie to Me is on anymore- great show. Human Target is good, but I have no idea what night it's on because it's all Idol all the time.

3. Fox will cancel it as soon as it gains popularity
They have a monkey in their office that throws darts blindfolded. Whatever it hits is what gets canceled.

4. They might change it
I'm also pretty worried about MTV wrecking E4's Skins - there are lots of drug/sex/sexuality plot lines that I can't see being shown on American TV.

20. Hey Left, what's new?
How is school? (what year are you now?) Seems like it wasn't that long ago that you went off to college?

:hi:

8. Hmm, my mother has it on her TiVo, I'll have to let her know not to delete it
I needs me Barrowman eye-candy!

Given the fact that Barrowman is a real-live gay man, I guarantee that trying to neuter Jack Harkness isn't going to go over well if it comes up.

22. It's not as if Captain Jack Harkness is all good guy
Just look at Children of Earth, the five-part Torchwood mini-series. Sure, Earth survived, but at a cost.

11. We Americans are obviously too stupid to watch British programming as is
This means that we have gotten stupider since the 1950s and 1960s, when The Avengers, The Prisoner, Secret Agent, Robin Hood, The Adventures of Sir Lancelot, and The Buccaneers were shown on American TV, complete with British accents.

I mean, we'd get all confused if we had to watch a bisexual alien fighter hanging around with all these people who had not just English but WELSH accents.

12. Driving on the wrong side of the road throws us for a big loop too.
And a car will say "Ford" on it, but it's confusing cause it ain't like no Ford we ever seen.

Same with women's breasts, them's less pneumatic or something.

14. And what's that funny colored (and what's with spelling it "coloured"?) money?
And funny-shaped coins?

And their funny drinks--shandy? Pimm's Cup?

And their funny foods--fish pie? I mean, come on!

And cricket, who can understand that?

Sorry, cannot deal with it. It's all too foreign.

15. Which U.S. city would be sort of like Cardiff?
Except I'm in sort of an odd mood today. I'd put it in Eureka California. Make some mish-mash science fiction woowoo out of the old Humboldt nuclear plant and that big empty hole they dug where they'd first planned to put it.

Leave gay Capt. Jack alone.

I wouldn't watch the new tv show.

Capt. Jack is the guy who likes everybody.

18. Capt. Jack is a badass who should never be changed for idiotic national tastes.
Edited on Tue Mar-23-10 08:54 PM by JanMichael
NEVER!

The character is omni-everything for god's sake. That's just one of the many great things about the show. Plus he can create man to man sensitivity and love unlike anything I've ever seen. The episode where he meets the man who he shares a name with (a soon to be dead WWII UK Captain and fighter pilot) is tear provoking and his kiss with that man transcends the homophobia that transfixes this culture. It is poignant and heart wrenching.

To make him "straight" would be a crime. I'm happily married to a beautiful and intelligent woman but that doesn't make the tenderness that Torchwood creates any less moving or entertaining. Any "straight" guy that can't take a guy to guy kiss on TV is a pathetic excuse for a human.
