Quick gardening question.

I was not planning to save seeds from my attempt at gardening last year, but as I was cleaning out the garden yesterday I found several pea pods that had been on the vine through the winter. I "harvested" about 30 peas from the pods and am wondering if they're still good to plant this year. Any idea? I'd plant them anyway if I had the room; I have very little gardenable soil and am not the best gardener as it is anyway and I don't have a lot of time/space to use on something I'm not pretty sure will work.

1. most commercial seeds are hybrids so their progeny will often not produce "true"

I would try them but if you are short on room maybe not - keep them again for next year - I keep seeds past their expiration dates and they still grow.

2. These are heritage/heirloom seeds, so they should produce true.

My question was more about being out in the cold all winter.

If they are heirlooms they will grow.
I have volunteer heirlooms growing that were eaten by goats,shit out,and sat in goat/chicken pen muck over the winter.If they will grow then I'm pretty sure yours will also.

7. I always do better starting with small plants

I never start anything from seed.

8. Plant them closer than you would normally and weed out the extras.

That way you're not wasting space if there's a low germination rate, but I agree with the others that the peas are probably fine.
