1. No. Its too cold in March.
But I've been in it many times in warmer months. I'm still alive. Its really quite clean. That being said, I would probably not want to swim below Blue Plains right after a major rainstorm.

You won't get sick
The worst pollutant in the Potomac is the PCB-soaked mud. So don't drink the mud on the bottom. If you don't do that and you don't already have a severely compromised immune system, you should be fine.

5. Depends
Around DC I wouldn't go anywhere near it but up towards the WV panhandle on a good day I would and have.

8. In DC its fine
I would be careful about going below the Anacostia, however, since it is very polluted and you have a notoriously ineffective sewage treatment plant right at its mouth.

7. I have, and I do...and will when it's warmer
But pretty much above DC, Little Falls or above because of the depth and current issues below Little Falls (above Chain Bridge is ok).

But to be truthful, I rarely eat the few fish I catch...I catch and release.

10. I have on many occasions
near the WV panhandle and Harpers Ferry, and in the headwaters further upstream in WV. Especially relaxing on those blistering hot summer days.

Don't know if I would swim downstream near the DC though.

I saw an auction on eBay a while back where someone was offering to pour the auction winner's urine in the Potomac near DC to get back at Congress and the Federal Bureaucrats, or at least the ones who don't drink bottled water...

11. I went to diving school
at Indian Head, Md. in 56. It was nasty even then. Yuk. Drank some too, not on purpose, but never got sick!
