Lost my dog yesterday
Misty the border collie is no longer with us.

We had to drive to a specialized vet clinic 100 miles away and then found that she had a huge tumor on liver. The vet said there was a 60/40 chance it was malignant. Only a survey and biopsy could tell. It was hemmoraging and causing her a lot of pain. The surgery would have cost between $2500 and $3000. I made a hard decision.

She was my best friend for over 9 years and I'm still grieving..

5. Oh, that is just horrible!!
Was she only 9 years old, or did you adopt her when she was already mature? That is such a young age for a pet to fall ill. My condolances.

8. She was almost a year old
when we rescured her from the pound.

Somebody had "dumped" her and she found her way to the place where I was working. She hung around there for a few days and the workers (and myself) shared our lunches with her. There were lots of semi-trailers coming in and out so the office manager had animal control pick her up to keep her from getting run over by the trucks. She was such a beautiful dog I couldn't let that happen so we took her from the pound as soon as it was legal.

6. You made the hard
decision but also the decision of compassion. I am so sorry. Not many of us can afford that kind of surgery for ourselves let alone our pets. Remember, it might not have been helpful anyway and just prolonged her suffering. Now you suffer but she is at rest. I am so sorry. You will grieve for a long time but IMO you did the only thing and the right thing.

9. I'm so sorry

You probably made the right decision, though. A similar thing just happened to my sister and her dog, only it was a tumor on the pancreas. Her and her husband went ahead with the surgery. It was malignant and quickly metastasized to the lungs. After only about three weeks, the dog had barely recovered from the surgery, he was having great trouble breathing and getting around. They had to put him to sleep Wednesday.

She said she never had heard her husband cry like that and is amazed at how much she hurts and how empty the house seems now.

You both lost a companion, a family member. Give it time. We're here. :grouphug:

15. sorry to here
So sorry to here about your loss. Our pets are loved members of our family who give back so much. My cat required surgery a year ago and it cost us a 1000 dollars. He is only three and the prognosis did not have the uncertainty that yours did. These are difficult decisions and I think you made the right one.

Border collies are great dogs but do have challenges. The movie Babe made them popular and people bought them not considering their temperaments and needs. At Longwood Gardens last year I saw about six. Their trainer indicated that they were rescued from owners who abandoned them and they were being used to keep the geese off the grounds. Take solace in that you were not one of these responsible owners, cared for your dog and received a great deal of love and companionship in return.

12. So sorry about Misty....
I lost my 14 year old best buddy Feb. 25th from heart failure while under anesthetics getting his teeth worked on....

I cried for a week, then once a day for the next few weeks, and now I have gone 2 days without wrenching sadness and mourning the loss.

Your decision was a good one.

16. So sorry for your loss of Misty
You did the right thing for Misty by letting her go. I had a Lab/Shepherd mix (also named Misty) who had the same problem and I sympathize with your decision....

Give yourself the time to grieve and keep the good memories of the years you shared with Misty close by. Trust me - you will have more smiles than tears soon.

18. It is always hard
when a loved pet passes on, no matter what the circumstances. They're really like children to us, only they don't have some of the challenges of real children. And of course they don't grow up and leave home, but remain with us, always faithful and loving.

You HAVE lost a member of the family, and even though your companion wasn't human, she filled a place in your life every bit as important as that of a spouse/child/lover.

Because our animals are so dependent on us, it's truly important to keep them from suffering, and you did the right thing. And you provided a decade of a good life to a wonderful dog who otherwise wouldn't have had it.

26. it's sad, but you made the right choice...
i had to go through the same thing (liver cancer at age 11) with my golden retriever.

not only is surgery expensive, but the quality of life post-surgery for a dog is significantly lowered. they can't romp & play, or do much of anything.

i'm sorry for your loss, but be comforted that you made the right decision.

28. sorry for your loss.
Lost mine last year. A 112lb. Dalmatian (cost me a buck a pound when I took him to the vet)that was a total butt-head. A real love hate relationship form the get go. The first dog I ever had that didn't have the unconditional love and devotion that most dogs have. Always out for himself, thought everything in the world was his. Every day I had to fight to keep my alpha position in the house. Loved him anyway.
