The original is on a clean print with good sound.

Here's a trivia question--what is unique about the way the original film was made?

Well, the answer is that there is no music score. Also, most of it was shot with a third person perspective. There were a few point of view shots, including the long shot across the river, but mostly it was third person. The purpose of course, as with the lack of music, was to present an unemotional, matter-of-fact presentation of horrific acts. There was no effort to hide or sensationalize it. Had this been a Hollywood movie, the rape scene would have been a montage with fancy lighting and poignent music. It was also interesting to see how the victim's character changed from this innocent, outgoing writer on a journey of self-discovery to becoming even colder and more violent than the rapists. When the film ends, notice where she is going and ask if that is how she got to her cottage at the beginning of the movie.

If you do want to see it, get the DVD with the Joe Bob Briggs commentary. It is an exceptionally difficult movie to watch due to its graphic portrayal of a long and brutal rape scene. The Briggs commentary makes it a bit more bearable because he explains the meaning of various techniques and symbols throughout the film.
