Tech Help Plz!...Mac OS X...Streaming problem
Edited on Fri Mar-26-04 01:19 PM by masmdu
I'm trying to watch the CSPAN clip of the "Unity" meeting last night.

here is the page with the link.

http://www.c-span.org/homepage.asp?Cat=Current_Event&Code=Vote_2004&ShowVidNum=6&Rot_Cat_CD=Vote_2004&Rot_HT=&Rot_WD=&ShowVidDays=15&ShowVidDesc=

Normally, when I watch CSPAN i choose RealPlayer and have no problems watching LIVE...now, when I try this archived link it launches my QuickTime player which tries to stream and then gives a "461 Unsupported Transport" message...

What can I do to either get QT to work correctly or watch this link with a different player (Real, or WindowsMediaPlayer)?

Thanks

1. save the .ram or whatever it is to disk first, then open
control-click the link. pick save to disk (or something like that). Just save it to the desktop. Then open up realplayer and drag the file on it.

Hope that works. That's the best generic advice I could give without knowing more about your setup.

2. Can't do that as the link is a bit of Javascript that auto launces QT....

Make sure your quicktime is up to date. Hit "Software Update" in the Apple menu and then hit "check for updates." Quicktime 6.5 just came out.

And don't listen to Windoze-heads :)

on edit: I mean the advice below.

3. right click (or control click) the file and select "open with"
then choose real player from the drop down menu.

7. I just tried the c-span link
and got server overload message on my OSX. Also on the left side of the c-span page, under Download Real Player, there is a hyperlink to problems solving video. You might try that first, then try connecting to the c-span program again.

9. Did you go into IE Preferences
and look under Protocol Helpers. RTSP in the scroll down menu should have the Real Player icon and a check mark by it. If it does, then you might try shutdown and restart your computer. Before OSX I would suggest rebuilding your desk top, but with X I don't think we do that outside the Classic environment.

10. Not having used a Mac in years
I'm not sure how to do this now, but you need to associate the file type with the player you want to use to play it. Loki's advice above sounds like it's on track.

12. I haven't used Safari much, but
I went into mine and it opens up Real Player when on the c-span site. Only one more suggestion, you might go to the Real Player site and download and install the Real Player for OSX again. In the preferences menu in Safari, you can check to see which plug ins are being used, and it does use Real Player. After this, I'm afraid I don't have much else to offer - except check Apple's tech site for any discussion on this specific problem. Sorry I couldn't help more.
