Several folks here were good enough to provide ideas about how to revive my laptop. Thanks for that. Unfortunately... I ended up having to activate the restore function on the hard drive.
The good news: The computer is running again and I did not lose a heck of a lot because things like family photos are backed up to CD.
The bad news is that I now have to reinstall several applications, rebuild all my IE and Firefox bookmarks and generally futz around with this thing for a long time to get it back to where I like it. But not spending $700 to $1,000 on a new laptop is a good thing.
