I hate carpet

We're looking at houses in North Carolina and we are using the services of a purchasing agent from our insurance company. I like older homes. (1700's-1950) I adore wood floors. I don't care for paneling on the walls but can live with a small amount of knotty pine in a den-like setting - though I do like paneling on the ceiling, exposed beams & assorted craftsman woodwork. I (really) don't like wallpaper. I like area rugs. I abhor carpet.

I get several emails a day showing me houses that meet my druthers...except for one teeny tiny absolutely steam inducing thing...carpet. As long as the carpet comes up with ease and the floor beneath is wood, I'm OK....but I need to know the carpet is easily removed and the floor is to my liking. Oh, it's not every house I'm shown...just one too many today. Hence the rant. Still...I said "NO carpet"...sigh

Just venting.

1. I don't hate all carpet...
A good quality, deep pile carpet can be nice, but I DESPISE textured BERBER!!! UGH!!! Every place I've bought comes with this nightmare dirt-collecting material, and it always seems to be some off-white color. It's impossible to keep this stuff looking clean. I have two bedrooms that have it now (luckily the rest of the place is hardwood flooring), and i'm deciding whether to go all hardwood, or replace the carpets with a nice thick pad and deep pile carpeting.

3. I've seen some beautiful carpet....and it looks so warm and plush.
I'm just a hardwood with area rug kind of person. I adore the gleam of a hardwood floor. I even like painted plank floors.

I've noticed that the off-white color for carpet is popular... and it just looks like a dirt disaster waiting to happen.

2. I don't have any...
We had carpet in one room of this house and then we got puppies. :)

No more carpet and it's nice! I hope you can find something easy to fix.

4. Puppies did it for me too! Years ago we had the pleasure of 8 puppies
for 10 weeks. No more carpet for me.

Thank you! I'm sure we'll find something. I was just frustrated.

5. '50s knotty pine paneling + sand, prime, and paint (white or pale blue, maybe) looks awesome.
How I dealt with a VERY paneled sunroom here in central Virginia. And I am a "never paint wood, always keep it exposed" kinda guy. But it changed the whole character of the room.

I, too, love wood floors. Our last house had 18th-century heart pine floors that were stained a deep reddish brown when we bought it. Our plan was to have them sanded and stained a much lighter color, but our floor guy called me after the sanding and said, "I can't stain these floors." When I asked, "Why?", he replied, "Just come and look at them." They were the most beautiful floors I had ever seen. We just sealed them with a clear urethane.

6. I cannot STAND carpet, either!
Partly it's because we have 6 cats, mostly it is just because to me, it seems so incredibly unsanitary. Permanent dirt collector, no matter how much you clean or vacuum. This may sound overly harsh, but I find it disgusting.

Now, I'd love to have some high quality carpets / area or full-room rugs that can be rolled up, moved around, etc... some beautiful, child-labor-free rugs.

I also like hardwood or tile, but if we build our own home, I'm seriously considering just stained, sealed concrete with the above-mentioned rugs.

33. I grew up in a house with concrete floors.
even though it was in the Phx AZ area it was always so effing cold in the winter, and so hard on your feet an legs.

Wood to me is the absolute best material for floors with the possible exception of bathrooms.

7. Agree totally. I despise carpet.
When we bought this house it had wall-to-wall butt ugly salmon colored carpet and plywood underneath. Our biggest splurge was to get hardwoods installed on the entire main level (minus kitchen & bathrooms. I didn't feel guilty about ripping up the carpeting because it was old and filthy.

When I was a kid we had our wall-to-wall carpeting replaced and the house painted. For a little while my room was down to the original hardwoods and I begged my parents to let me keep it that way. They wouldn't do it.

15. Yes! What is it with the butt-ugly colors in carpet choices?
I opened one email just to delete it immediately because of the carpet color in the first picture. I didn't want to see the rest of the house. I know that sounds bad but...yuck. The carpet was some sort of mustard yellow that looked green in some spots...and this was a "remodeled" home.

8. Totally with you on that.
I really don't get the appeal or why some people are obsessed with it. It's hard to keep clean and so unnecessary. (especially light-colored/white carpet. Gods, WHY?!?)

9. No carpet in my home...
it was built in 1931, 3/4" solid oak tongue-in-groove hardwood flooring. The floor was covered with horrid 70's colored carpets through out the house barring the kitchen and the bathroom when it was purchased and moved to the farm.

25. I am probably
a little biased but, they are beautiful to me. :) A lot of 'quarter sawn' oak in the floors too....scattered here and there. The guys that moved the house were blown away by the 72 feet long, 12" X 12", solid 'fat lightered' sills under the house. You just cannot get old growth building materials like that these days.

12. We spent more than $40,000 to replace carpeting in our house with
wood floors. And it was not a single penny misspent.

You're not alone on this.

13. I'm the opposite. I like carpet and tile. Don't care for hardwood or laminate.
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 02:35 PM by Tommy_Carcetti
Tile works well in common areas, at least in Florida style houses. My common area has laminate--not a fan, looks like a basketball court, but right now priorities are elsewhere other than to replace it, so I'll have to live with it.

Bedrooms have to be carpeted for me. I don't like to step onto the floor first thing in the morning and feel cold wood. I like a nice, plush carpet that softly greets my feet.

27. You forgot to mention the hung ceilings - arond here when the plaster in old
houses started to go, everyone put up cheap "wood" paneling and a hung ceiling instead of taking down the plaster and putting up dry wall. We even saw a house with 10' ceiling where they'd turned the 8' panels sideways! (Wait a minute - we bought that house! Only lived there a year before moving to this house!)

29. Yeah...I hafta admit to cringing when I see hung ceiling in an old house.
We're not looking for anythng fancy...an old farmhouse or craftsman. I saw one today that was a beauty and just over 100K. (1920 craftsman, 3/3,.75 acres, in the city, hardwoods through and through, tile in the bathrooms) Truly an excellent deal...so I emailed my agent and asked, "What's the catch?"

28. Carpet is used because it's a cheap floor covering
I hate carpet too, especially cheap carpet but I'm not all that fond of even expensive carpet. Give me hard surface floors and rugs any day of the week.

I installed bamboo floors in my house and after several years I'm convinced it's absolutely the best flooring material ever. It's environmentally responsible. It's cheap (relative to many other options). It's attractive. It's durable. What more could you want, really. You might consider getting a house based on other factors you like and change the flooring at a later date. That's what I did. Even though I had my home built new I installed bamboo later. The builder was going to gouge me on the costs and I didn't like the options he offered anyway. Unlike people (for the most part) you can change what you don't like about your home.

At least in some of the rooms...

Carpet isn't a deal-breaker - I just don't like it. After the 10th (more) house of the day with carpet, carpet, carpet....I needed to vent.

35. for about 6 months of my entire life I wanted carpet
as mentioned above, I grew up with concrete floors. My best friends got new carpet in their house sometime in the early 70's - you can imagine - gold multi-length shag! I was jealous of the warm fuzzy floors they had compared to our hard cold cement.

I got over that after living in my first apt. UGH! carpet - so gross, so hard to clean - scratch that IMPOSSIBLE to clean, just NO!

I like wood and I really want to look at bamboo - I have heard great things but never seen it.

37. Here's a picture of bamboo flooring

I saw a picture of a kitchen with concrete flooring. It was stained a golden brown, with espresso cabinets and coordinating granite counter-tops. It was gorgeous! The accent colors were olive green and burnt sienna. As pretty as it was, I prefer bright kitchens.

39. We have a small
(1250 sf) older (1924) house
All rooms are hardwood except for this 2nd BR which is covered in carpet
We're whipping the hardwood rooms onto shape
We are not in the position to rip up the rug right now but I guess the floor under is in good condition
For now it serves as the dog's throw-up area:eyes:
