I haven't bought a DVD in a while (other than BSG), and usually I would buy online, but I found some good ones that were worth it:

Zodiac, Intolerable Cruelty, No Country For Old Men, Paranormal Activity, REC, Tell No One, and 13 Tzameti.

Maybe there is a Hollywood Video closing near you (shakes fist at Netflix), you could find some good deals!

1. I myself have scraped those bones (ours closed a year ago) and honestly the movies

sit unwatched along with the rest of my DVD collection. The only three movies I have even watched from my collection in the last year are Glengarry Glen Ross, Rocky Balboa, and Baccanales Sexulles.

I also blame Netflix... mainly their instant watch which has made my DVD collection superfluous.

6. The only DVDs I buy are foreign ones that haven't been released in the U.S.
and therefore are not on Netflix.

I have a region-free player (not that expensive), and I order a lot of British and Japanese television programs from Amazon's foreign sites.

(I highly recommend the original British version of Life on Mars--released in the U.S. about five years after its UK run--and its three-year-long sequel, Ashes to Ashes, which completes the thread started in Life on Mars and ties up all the loose ends.)

9. Ashes to Ashes?
I loved Life on Mars (damn, John Simm is hot). I'll have to see if Netflix has Ashes to Ashes...

10. They don't
They only have DVDs that have been released in the U.S.

Ashes to Ashes doesn't feature John Simm but it does feature Keeley Hawes (Zoe on MI-5) as a police psychologist who is shot and wakes up in the 1980s. She has read Sam Tyler's file, so she is a bit more cued in than he was. Gene and the station gang are back with some new characters, too.

2. I've gotten a bunch of movies from the blockbuster closings
No Hollywood videos around here, so I'll have to wait for another Blockbuster to close, lol!

3. The Hollywood Videos in my area closed years ago. I was mad at the time because
Blockbuster beat them out and I always hated Blockbuster. Now Netflix has hobbled Blockbuster, but I love Netflix. Even Netflix fully admits that soon they won't be shipping dvds at all. Everything will stream.

4. Good job. I pay $8.99 per month for hundreds of thousands of movies and tv shows
on Netflix. Throwing out my whole dvd collection.

14. Very true. The video------>DVD stores basically ripped people off for a few decades.
You didn't usually get your first choice. You had to stand in line forever. You were charged a ridiculous amount of money. If you didn't buy their stupid insurance they charged you full NEW retail for a worthless broken used movie.

And if you were the forgetful type...you were screwed with late fees.

5. I think Netflix is wonderful. Blockbuster and Hollywood had business
models that worked great in the 1990s and even up until a few years ago. But Redbox and Netflix tapped into consumer desire and sentiment and came up with a better model.

I did pick up some movies when they were closing but the price wasn't as good as what you found.
