They just stopped by to say hello. It was almost exactly a year ago his family moved from Iowa to El Paso. His single mother wanted to be closer to her family - her mother, 3 brothers and a sister. Certainly a smart move for her but tearful for all of us. We had worked with Jesus for 4 years as mentors starting in 3rd grade. After a slow start, we started to mesh and those grades went north fast. Now they are in El Paso. I had chance to have a long talk with one of his uncles before they left last year. Jesus' uncle assured me that academics would be #1. And it appears that they have been. All As in the advanced classes. And as you could expect when you haven't seen a young man between his 13th and 14th birthday, Jesus is about 6 inches taller and slimmed down a bit. We are now eyeball to eyeball. We have of course kept in touch, but it is just not the same as seeing someone. And while they are here we only get to see them for a short time. We have about 4000 in this town and I think they have to visit 2000 of them. It is sure a good feeling to have had a chance to affect someone's life like that.
