$10,000 (pics)
A wise trucker once told me to have $10,000 in the bank before you hit the road in your own truck. That's above your start-up costs and your down payment. The reasoning being is that you can weather just about any truck repair with that much money. About the most expensive thing to repair on a truck is a major overhaul of the engine, and at the time, about 12 years ago, $10,000 is about what it cost. I didn't listen to him when I bought my first truck and I almost lost my ass. I had to borrow my truck payment from my folks at one point; the only time I've ever borrowed money from my parents.

Well, I listened this time and I started out with 12 grand in the bank when I hopped on the road.

The reason why I'm telling you that is that I'm currently enduring my third breakdown in the first month since going into business for myself again. Nothing major, but this one left me on the side of the road. I broke down in the Middle of Nowhere, Montana. I know that because there was a sign next to me where I pulled the truck off at that said: Middle of Nowhere, Montana. Population: You. Actually, I was about mid way in between Crow Agency and Broadus, Montana on the eastern edge of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. I had driven through the Crow Indian Reservation. More on that in a minute. The closest repair shop with road service was 45 miles away in Broadus and they sent someone out to me. I had blown a coolant hose and simply couldn't go any further due to the truck overheating.

I think I'm going to name my truck either The Lemon Express or The Roadside Inn.

At least I had a nice view.

When you have three breakdowns in one week it will give you a bad case of Bitter Trucker Face.

These reservation homes were across the highway from me. As you can see, they are mostly in a state of disrepair and neglect. The reason for that more than likely being that the inhabitants live in a state of near poverty if not poverty. Most of the houses I saw on the reservations were like that.

This dog wandered across the highway to check out my truck. I thought she was a feral fog at first. She looked kind of like a coyote, but then I realized she was too small to be a coyote. Possibly a coyote mix I guess. I didn't see where she came from. She just kind of appeared out of nowhere, or before I noticed anyway.

She was very thin and walked up to me after I got out of the truck to pet her. Seeing that I had no food, she wasn't interested in petting. She then wandered off into the weeds and disappeared as mysteriously as she appeared. This is, btw, a very common way that truckers obtain pets. They are often adopted strays.

The guys who showed up to work on my truck didn't inspire much confidence, they appeared to be young and inexperienced in truck mechanical matters. But they got me patched up good enough to make it the 45 miles to the shop where a proper repair could be made. I managed to get a few more miles in before I ran out of hours so the day wasn't a total loss. I'm in Rapid City, South Dakota.

3. You have to keep your sense of humor when things get tough
It could mean the difference between breaking down and giving up or making things work and moving forward. I think that applies to life in general and not just trucking, but it certainly gets put to the test more when you drive for a living. :D

4. Yeah I guess she does
I usually do have some sort of food in the truck. A bag of chips or a sandwich or something, but I'd just consumed the last of my vittles when my truck started overheating.

10. great minds, knowbody0 ... I was going to suggest a small
bag of dog kibble, and a separate small bag of cat kibble for that special furry friend who needs a meal. Or a home. :hi:

Sorry it's been such a bad go at first, Tobin. But maybe you'll get your quota of breakdowns out of the way up front and it'll be smooth sailing, or driving, soon!

8. I was going to say, "It can't get any worse," but
every time I say that, things seem like they do. I'm not really a supersticious person, but I guess I might be enough of one after 3 breakdowns in one week that I might have to turn in my skeptic card and knock on some wood.

9. I hope you are keeping a record of these posts, and the
photos as well. You could write a series of articles, or even a book. You describe and write very well.

I hope things start to go more smoothly for you very soon. Please keep us informed. You and Demo Tex are two of the most interesting story tellers on DU.

16. Log book rules involve hours of service
When I come on duty in my log book after a 10 hour break, I have a 14 hour window from that point in which I can drive a maximum of 11 hours. Once the 11 or 14 hours expire, whichever comes first, I have to take a 10 mhour break before I can drive again.

12. Been there, done that, even have the face down pat.
This last week, alternator AND a frickin' starter...$1260 out the window for a tractor that I'm only going to drive two more weeks.

The starter I could see, as it was the original one, eleven years and 1,395,088 miles old.

But that damn alternator was the THIRD one this year. WTF is up with that, no one seems to know. Just one of those things, or a statistical anomaly, I guess.

At least neither cost me a road service call or a ride on 'Captain Hook', and I didn't eat the batteries this time when the alternator took a dump.

Here's my version of that face, oddly similar:

20. I can't remember the last time I broke down on the road. About
30 or 40 years ago, I guess, and then it wasn't my car.
Somewhere up in the Rockies near Denver.
Once in the Rockies after dinner, I had my friends Pinto (?) and my brother was with me. I started the car, and it sounded like the pulley bolt on the alternator was loose. I tightened it, and on we went to Chicago.
I just got more towing insurance for my motorcycle. $8 per year. That gives me 3 programs.
I had a nail in the rear tire last month, but the tpm told me and I happened to stop in front of a ... tire store. Got a patch and went on.
Maybe I can share some of my luck with you here.
After 3 breakdowns, a truck probably won't ever break down again.
But check all your hoses and lines ahead of time. Do a good inspection.
And Good Luck.

It made me laugh! And you got a good few photos out of your enforced break down in The Middle Of Nowhere, Montana. Not bad for one day. Start an album and include these little stories and generations ahead will enjoy them. You can name it the USA as seen by Tobin, the sometimes bitter trucker.
