Has anyone ever been an egg donor?
I wouldn't be doing this for a few years, but I'm thinking of becoming an egg donor. I am a firm believer in donating as many body parts as possible, and I don't want biological children of my own so, hell, I don't need them.

What's the process like? Also, will anyone take my eggs, since I have bipolar disorder?

1. Sure, I lent a neighbor 2 eggs once to make a cake -
it didn't hurt a bit.

2. My dear lightningandsnow...
Those are very good questions, and I'm not sure of the answers. The most important question of course, is the one about your bipolar disorder. I suspect, but again, I'm not sure, but I doubt they would take your eggs. It would depend on whether or not such a disorder is biological in nature.

You need to ask the folks in charge of such a place.

Good luck, sweetie...

3. my best friend did a few years ago...
The hardest part for her was that the hormones made her VERY horny, but she couldn't have sex. Aside from that though, she said it was fine. I don't know about the bipolar disorder issue. I'll ask her about the screening process for you though and get back to you if you're interested.

4. Hmmm I am gonna guess that BP would make ladies like us a no-go. I think the odds of
passing it on to a child is something like 1 in 5? It's one of the reasons why I have my eye on one of my kids. :(

But the only way to know for sure is to check with whoever runs that program.

9. There's a chapter in the book
"Woman; An Intimate Geography by Natalie Angier that describes the process. The whole book is great, often hilarious. My favorite is the chapter about breasts, 'Circular Reasonings', (The one for breast milk is called, of course 'Holy Water')but then there's the chapter on hormones, entitled 'Greasing The Wheels'

The chapter that gives a bit of information on your topic is 'Unscrambling the Egg'

It's an overview, no more

10. why would you wait a few years? who wants older eggs?
Edited on Sun Aug-15-10 12:38 AM by pitohui
i thought you had to be in your early twenties to be an egg donor (could be wrong i suppose!)

it's well documented now that the first-born child lives longer than the other children (because the mother's eggs were freshest/youngest when first born came along) and it's also now documented that the children of mothers in their early twenties have a longer life expectancy than children of older mothers, same thing, eggs age, that's why women have more trouble getting pregnant or carrying healthy babies to term as they age

what responsible doctor would allow egg collection from somebody who "has waited a few years"? i could see it for a college girl who wanted to pay for school w.out working in porn but past a certain age the opportunity is gone

in any case, no i haven't done it, i was born w. a genetic disorder, it would be a shitty thing to do, to pass that on to a child

so i'm not speaking from personal experience, from what i've read, it's totally not worth the money though, because of the heavy use of hormones required and the changes your body goes thru, for a few thousand dollars you might be increasing your cancer risk (?) -- i'd check that, it might not be true, might be one of those scare stories tho...

if you're serious and think you qualify, do it when you're young, definitely, give the kid the best chance, eggs don't improve w. age

who desperately want kids but for whatever reasons need the kind of help you can offer.

I would dearly love to have a child, if we could afford IFV or GIFT w/donor eggs, and I would be perfectly proud to accept your eggs, BP and all.

12. Too old now, but would have
I didn't realize that eggs were in short supply when I was young enough to donate them. If I had, I would have. I still feel bad that I never did. I think you should research the process and seriously think about making a donation.

13. I also have bipolar disorder...
I never had children because I didn't want to pass it on. I wouldn't donate eggs, but, of course, it's up to you.
