We have to have our upstairs bathroom remodeled since it's really in bad shape. We aren't looking for anything high-end or fancy or trying to turn it back into the Victorian bathroom it once was (which according to one guy would cost 40,000!) :wtf:

First quote we had was 10,000 for replacing everything, redoing the floors, some new pipes, labor, new drywall, etc. Seemed a bit high, we thought, but then we've never had anything this big done before.

:wow:

thanks in advance! :hi:

6. Upstate NY...you may be able to find someone for $6k...
A lot will depend on your materials. Also, if your husband can do the demolition, especially if it involves the busting up of ceramic tiles which is time consuming, you might be able to get a break from the contractor.

4. At Wal-mart, you can even get new towel holders for about $10
That way, you can match your towel holders to your towels. That's what I did, and I'm now the envy of the neighborhood with my black plastic towel accessories. :)

5. Here's what you can do to test the quotes yourself
Find the retail prices of all the parts and pieces and hardware that will need to be replaced. Add those up and multiple that number by 2.5 - 3.5 for the labor cost and profit margins for the contractor. It's not exact, but it will at least give you an idea.

When I did my roof, I priced all the materials myself, then hired an out-of-work roofer for $10/hour. I saved about $5,000.

we rented a tile saw from home depot and did it ourselves for under $1000 but my husband is VERY skilled and i had some "alternative" sources of some things like mirrors, etc.

i think we did it earlier in the summer because the home depot frequently has these incredible sales in july but i'm not suggesting you wait another year or anything

but you save more than you think if you can DYI in our experience ( we don't do our own electrical wiring, though)

also makes a diff if you can save the old tub, sink, etc, we got a new low flo toilet, new sink, but were able to save the old tub

there are ways to clean old tubs, forgetting them now, but you can google it or ask at home depot/lowes

biggest hassle was making the old toilet disappear, the garbage pick up wouldn't take it (too heavy), i think we had to break it before they would haul it off...wear eye protection or get on freecycle and have someone take it away

8. If you choose to save a tub, mine was an old porcelain with
yellowing and graying. I used Bar Keepers Friend cleanser, and will swear by it. For the price of a can, you can see if it will work for yours too.
