I don't know much about painting. This is kind of reminiscent of Van Gogh.

6. Van Gogh and Hartley were contemporaries, and came of age in the same period,
although across oceans.

You don't need to know much about art to appreciate Hartley's work. He was a major American Artist who painted vivid landscapes, and works with great pathos, sadness, madness, mixed in irony and humor.

It seems odd to me that Hartley is not more widely appreciated. Many of his paintings take your breath away, in particular his landscapes.

I have posted his work here before, his startling 1943 work, "Christ Held by Half Naked Men."
