World Cup Hosts Will Be Announced in 3 Minutes
And if the US doesn't get it in 2022, it'll be because we sent Bill Clinton to pitch and Australia sent Elle Macpherson!

1. Seriously why would we even care about this....
I mean this morning I drove to work and saw a sign that says the world is going to end on May 21st 2011.

:pals:

...with oil and natural gas.

11. Quite honestly it wouldn't surprise me.
We're talking about the 164th largest country in the world (approximately 7% the size of the state of Florida) hosting the world's largest soccer competition. A nation ruled by an absolute monarchy where under Qatar's Sharia, it is illegal to show alcohol or be drunk in public. Have they never seen a World Cup before? Forget hotel rooms, are they going to have enough jail cells? ;-)

16. While I was hoping for Spain/Portugal (I don't mind the joint bid crap)...
Russia makes some degree of sense to me.

Qatar? Nothing about it makes sense. As ashamed as I am to say it, I'd like it to be a dud there as well.

Too bad. A damn hockey country--with 11 time zones--getting the world's biggest sport!

<now for the '22 World Cup>

8. No, Russia is a good choice. They have a good football tradition.
Although they've been playing lousily lately.

And I'll bet 90% of the games will be West of the Urals.

Now... Qatar? Give me a fucking break.

15. Small countries only look small on a map.
I have no doubt that, for example, either the Netherlands or Belgium could host a Cup on their own. Screw that "joint bid" crap.

17. it's a third the size of the State of Maryland
Bascially it's like hosting the World Cup entirely on the Maryland Eastern Shore. What's small is small on a map or not.

25. well you'd want to get to Orlando about a week in advance
and then walk everywhere. You'd luck out that with so many stadiums, they'd be so close together, you could walk to multiple games.

19. Belgium is about 3 times the size of Qatar and the Netherlands is almost 4 times larger.
I don't mind joint bids as long as they make sense. Belgium/The Netherlands and Spain/Portugal makes sense. South Korea and Japan? Not as much.

26. I always thought the heat was the bid-killer
There's no way to predict what Qatar will be like culturally/socially/politically in 12 years, but there's a pretty good way to predict what it will be like climate-wise.

13. As I thought, all proposed Russian venues but one are in the European side:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_FIFA_World_Cup#Venues

The one that's actually East of the Urals (Yekaterinburg) isn't actually that far:

18. I'd consider going to Russia for a World Cup.
My kids will be mostly grown by 2018 so I can swallow any residual guilt about leaving them behind. But I was really really looking forward to 2022 when all of them would be grown and out of the house and my husband and I could plan a huge World Cup holiday to celebrate our independence. Not in Qatar we won't!
