Poll question: Tommy (the Album) by the Who. Good or lame?
I listened to it recently and while there are some great tracks on it, I think that overall it's pretty lame.

1. Might be the single most played to death "classic" album in rock history
I was just reading something the other day in which Daltrey was discussing a Who tour for 2011 and saud "We may play "Tommy" if I can still hit the notes" and I thought "Dear GOD, don;t let him hit those damned notes."

2. I think it's awesome.
Full of tasty acoustic strumming and soaring rock too big to be contained in an album sleeve. There are bits that get tiresome, I think.

3. you have to look at it in context of the story - it was a very popular
when it first came out and the movie is quite good, too.

4. the 60's was the era of musical genius
Never before or after was so much music released in such a short period of time. Those people lived for it. They worshiped it. Music was the 60s. The 60s was music.

I am so jealous of those that got to live through it.

And I have seen Tommy, the movie and it was great.

5. I think it's brilliant.
The album makes one reconsider the entire concept of worship. I developed a new appreciation for Tommy after seeing the stage show; the story is surprisingly deep.

6. Tommy is overrated. Quadrophenia is underrated.

8. It has the same problem that mosr concept albums do (unless the concept is pretty loose)
Too much filler material to move the plot along.

OTOH, it has some really great songs, including a bunch that weren't really the big hit singles (Sally Simpson comes to mind).

Tightened up like Who's Next (an abandoned rock opera where they tossed the filler and kept the good stuff) and it would be an all-time-great. But I agree that overall, it's a bit of a mixed bag.
